Take a peek at the world’s most beautiful repurposed buildings and discover how their innovative transformations honor the past while meeting modern needs. Bombay Sapphire transformed an old British bank note mill into a modern distillery with the help of Heatherwick Studio. The Laverstoke Mill facility opened in 2014, featuring restored structures and original machinery. Heatherwick Studio also created two glasshouses for the tropical and Mediterranean plants essential to the gin's flavor. Next, built in 1912 by architect Manuel del Busto, the Church of Santa Barbara was abandoned for years until skaters found it. Where parishioners once sat, there's now a half pipe. The church retains its papal roots but has a vibrant new look with rainbow graffiti-style murals. In 2015, Okuda San Miguel adorned the walls and ceiling with skater-themed art like skulls and animals. Lastly, Canfranc Estación, once a buzzing rail hub, had its grand opening in 1928 attended by the President of the French Republic and the King of Spain. It ceased operations in 1970 after a series of misfortunes, including a fire and train derailment. The Bárcelo Hotel Group preserved the fa?ade and renovated the interiors, transforming it into a nostalgic hotel with 104 rooms. Jeddah Tower, set to be the world's tallest skyscraper, has officially resumed construction in Saudi Arabia after a pause in construction said to result from financial and contract issues. Designed by Adrian Smith + Gill Gordon Architecture and initially halted in 2018, the project is now expected to complete in 2028. Kingdom Holding Company confirmed the restart with a ceremony and plans to finish a floor every 4 days. Brands to watch in 2025: From innovative skin care to unique performance clothing brands, these retailers are separating themselves from the rest. The direct-to-consumer (DTC) business model, where companies sell products directly to customers, bypassing third-party retailers, has undergone significant changes over the past decade as funding has become scarcer, and profitability expectations rise. The trend of "cutting out the middleman" is fading as consumer preferences shift, prompting many brands to open their own stores and partner with wholesalers. Rhone: Founded in 2014 by brothers Nate and Ben Checketts, Rhone is a performance-driven brand committed to mental fitness, community, and quality products. In July 2022, private equity firm L Catterton sold its stake to a group led by Rhone management and other investors, which helped Rhone double its growth rate. Rhone has expanded its product range and physical store presence totaling 16 locations. The brand has also launched a women's Ernesta: The Peloton co-founders made a surprising leap from fitness to home decor with their new venture, Ernesta, a direct-to-consumer custom-cut rug brand. The company's official debut was in September 2023. Ernesta rapidly expanded, opening stores in NYC’s Upper East Side, Greenwich, CT, and Bethesda, MD. Prequel: Founded by Dr. Samantha Ellis and brand accelerator The Center, Prequel launched in July 2023 and rapidly expanded. Sold at Target retail locations, this solution-focused skincare brand aims to maintain healthy skin without a dermatologist visit. Starting with three products, Prequel now offers 20, including serums, peels, and sun protection. After its online launch, the brand expanded to Target in August. These trailblazing women are transforming architecture and design… Less than 1% of U.S. licensed architects are Black women, and only 2.3% of interior designers identify as Black or African American. While these numbers remain low, Black-led design firms are on the rise. Progress is happening, but there's still much room for improvement in the design and architecture industry. Below are the stories of women who are breaking barriers and making history in the design industry: ?Tavia Forbes & Monet Masters: Despite her father being a furniture maker, Tavia Forbes didn’t consider a design career until she saw Vern Yip on TLC’s “Trading Spaces.” Monet Masters, on the other hand, had an innate talent for noticing a space's story through its details. Their paths crossed on a client project, and the two decided to launch their luxury interior design studio, Forbes Masters. They envision the future of design as more inclusive and diverse, already witnessing changes as clients embrace personal, global, and art-inspired styles. They want the future of design to provide broader access to both the design process and the professionals who deliver these services. They believe that cultural diversity should be integral to design, not just an added element. ?Justina Blakeney: Justina Blakeney envisions a future of design that’s not only beautiful but also sustainable, diverse, and thoughtful. She emphasizes the importance of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient practices, and working in harmony with nature. Blakeney advocates for design that considers social, ethical, and emotional impacts, and promotes diversity and representation. ?Sandra Githinji: From a young age, Sandra Githinji knew she wanted a creative career. Driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully, she graduated from RMIT University in 2016 and worked at notable architecture firms across the Asia Pacific. Battling burnout, she resigned and founded her own practice, redefining design through cultural histories, pedagogy, activism, and built form. Last year, she collaborated with the Black in Design Collective for CB2 and now focuses on enhancing accessibility within sub-Saharan Africa. We're proud to share these stories of perseverance, creativity, and commitment to diversity despite adversity. They serve as powerful reminders of the potential we all have to shape a more inspiring and inclusive future.
