AAFAME Spotlight Interview: Michael Shanklin Michael Shanklin, a native of Hobbs, New Mexico, serves as the Lead Engineer at Endeavor Real Estate Group. As the youngest of six siblings, Michael’s journey to Austin began with military service. After enlisting in the Army, he found himself stationed in Austin, & when his service concluded, he decided to make the city his permanent home. His career in engineering started in 1986 when he partnered with Kevin James & joined AAFAME, a decision that would shape his successful career in building engineering. Michael’s connection with AAFAME has deepened over the years. He serves on multiple committees, including the Membership, Community Service, & EXPO Committees. His commitment to giving back to AAFAME reflects his appreciation for the impact the organization has had on his career. One of Michael’s most unforgettable work experiences occurred while he was maintaining the Littlefield Building Mall. He was responsible for managing the sump pump, & when it malfunctioned, it led to basement flooding with sewage. Despite the challenging conditions & unpleasant odors, Michael tackled the clean-up with dedication, ensuring that the area was left spotless and sanitized. Michael’s passion for his work shines through as he shares his primary career goal: “I want to be the best building engineer possible.” He loves his role at Endeavor Real Estate Group, praising the company’s personal approach & the way it values and acknowledges its employees. “It’s a great company, & you’re not just a number here. They really appreciate us.” When asked what theme song would represent his company, Michael instantly thinks of *We Are the Champions* by Queen, a fitting anthem for his sense of pride in working at Endeavor. Outside of work, Michael enjoys basketball, though he has slowed down on the court. These days, he’s more likely to be found watching games & cheering for his lifelong favorite team, the San Antonio Spurs. He also has a love for tennis but prefers to watch it now rather than play. Michael has a personal dream: to open a jazz club. A music lover, he counts Kyle Turner among his favorite jazz musicians & hopes to create a space where others can share in his passion for live jazz. Michael's favorite aspects of AAFAME are the people, educational opportunities, & camaraderie. He expresses sincere gratitude, particularly to Amy, for her support in his education & career growth. “AAFAME has been instrumental in my success as an engineer,” he adds, highlighting the strong sense of community & professional development the organization provides.
