Check out this video from FDA to see how the Division of Applied Regulatory Sciences is using Organ-on-a-Chip technology to inform regulatory guidance that supports the adoption of non-animal models in drug development. This work is a continuation of the cooperative research and development agreement Emulate established with the FDA’s CDER, NCTR, and CVM divisions in 2020, and we are proud to see how they are successfully applying our technology across multiple divisions to better understand human response to drug candidates.

Don’t miss Professor Philip Demokritou of Rutgers University presenting his latest research on micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) using Emulate Organ-Chips at the Society of Toxicology's annual meeting today! His poster session (1:45–4:15pm) will showcase how advanced in vitro models—including an organoid-based Intestine-Chip—are helping to uncover the mechanisms by which polystyrene MNPs can be taken up and transported across the human intestinal barrier. This cutting-edge work sheds light on how MNPs may breach our defenses through both passive diffusion and multiple active endocytic pathways, all while highlighting potentially important gene expression changes—particularly relevant for human health risk assessment. A big congratulations to Philip Demokritou, Davood Kharaghani, Glen DeLoid, Ben Swenor, and the co-authors of this newly published paper on the uptake and potential toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics—especially for demonstrating the power of Organ-on-a-Chip technology in their research! By leveraging a more physiologically relevant Intestine-Chip model, they were able to closely mimic the human small intestine, gather critical insights into MNP absorption mechanisms, and even explore disease-specific responses (like Crohn’s) in a way that static cell culture simply can’t achieve. We’re thrilled that our Organ-Chip platform played a key role in this breakthrough study. It’s yet another example of how human-relevant, microfluidic models can open new frontiers in understanding environmental contaminants and their potential impacts on our health. Thank you to the entire research team for advancing the field and for choosing Organ-Chips to help drive this innovation.
