Last week was all about #bravery, and this week we're diving deep into #empathy! For this week's #MomentForYourMindMonday,?? I invite you to reflect on the concept of empathy. Consider the following: ?? How would you define empathy? ?? What does it feel like, physically and emotionally, for you to experience empathy? Once you have an idea of how you conceptualize and experience empathy, describe a time when someone has shown you empathy and, in turn, when you have displayed empathy to someone else. If you're comfortable, let's hear those empathic moments in the comments!?? . . . #Empowerment #EmpoweredLiving #Journaling #JournalingPrompts #MentalHealth #Wellbeing #MentalHealthAndWellbeing #Wellness #CopingSkills #Mindfulness #UnconditionalPositiveRegard #Support

Another act of bravery could include dedicating the time and space for yourself to participate in this #MomentForYourMindMonday!?? Can you identify 1 thing you did that required bravery? Let's celebrate your success in the comments!?? . . . #Empowerment #EmpoweredLiving #Journaling #JournalingPrompts #Freebie #MentalHealth #Wellbeing #Wellness #MentalHealthAndWellness #Mindfulness #CopingSkills #Prevention #Bravery #Courage

#MomentForYourMindMonday?? is upon us once again! This week we're talking about what to do when we're lacking #inspiration. Lacking inspiration from time to time is a natural human experience and can also be associated with a loss of motivation or drive to complete a task, diminished ambition to accomplish a goal, and/or a lack of creativity. It can occur as a result of inefficient boundaries, relying solely on external factors for motivation, giving more than you receive yourself, and lacking the ability to be mindful. Understanding we all experience this at different phases of our lives, I'm opening up the dialogue on, and inviting you to consider, what activities, rituals, and/or techniques do you rely on to help when you're feeling uninspired? I invite you to join me for this conversation in the comments!?? . . . #Empowerment #EmpoweredLiving #Journaling #JournalingPrompts #Freebie #MentalHealth #Wellness #Wellbeing #MentalHealthAndWellness #CopingSkills #Mindfulness #Depression #Anxiety #Prevention

Though every month is dedicated to suicide prevention in my opinion, today marks the official end of #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth. This month's #MomentForYourMindMonday?? posts have focused on a variety of helpful approaches to suicide prevention and mental health promotion, including identifying things to look forward to, using literature to enhance emotional intelligence, and reducing violent language. That being said, I would be remiss to not include a prompt about #SelfCare! I invite you to take a brain break as we start this week to reflect on and identify at least 3 self-care activities you plan to participate in this week. Here are some ideas to get you started: ??♀? Incorporate intentional, joyful movement! ?? Prioritize time for hobbies, such as reading! ?? Spend distraction-free time with a pet! ?? Dedicate an extra 2 minutes in the shower to practice sensory grounding! ?? Allot time to budget for the month ahead! ?????? Practice mindfulness as you spend time with people you care about! Let's hear your ideas for self-care activities you hope to accomplish this week in the comments!?? ***If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please dial 988 (U.S., Canada), call your local crisis intervention number, or visit the nearest emergency room. . . . #Empowerment #EmpoweredLiving #Journaling #JournalingPromots #Freebie #SelfCare #MentalHealth #Wellness #Wellbeing #MentalHealthAndWellness #SuicidePrevention #Hobbies #Budgeting #Mindfulness #Grounding #Movement

It's Week 4?? of #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth! For today's #MomentForYourMindMonday?? prompt, we're focusing on the power of language. During one of my doctoral courses at Wilmington University, we were asked to create a list of as many commonly used phrases we could think of that employ violent language. This activity has remained at the forefront of my mind ever since, and I continue to reflect on the words and phrases I use each and every day to ensure I'm not inadvertently contributing to a culture of violence. After all, when we offer our brains more neutral to positive language, we are working to weaken those unhelpful, violent thought patterns! Suicide prevention efforts work to mitigate self-directed violence, and it is my belief we can all facilitate this mission by practicing mindfulness and healthy reframes of the violent phrases we're using. Today's prompt has two parts: 1.) Begin by creating a list of commonly used phrases you believe employ violent language. 2.) Once you've created that list, develop new phrases through reframing that instead use compassionate, nonviolent, and/or neutral language. ?? Let's help one another out on this one by sharing your ideas in the comments!?? ***If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please dial 988 (U.S., Canada), call your local crisis intervention number, or visit the nearest emergency room. . . . #Empowerment #EmpoweredLiving #Journaling #JournalingPromots #Freebie #MentalHealth #Wellbeing #MentalHealthAndWellbeing #CopingSkills #Language #LanguageMatters #Prevention #Mindfulness #CognitiveReframing #ThoughtReframing

Keeping with the theme of #NationalSuicidePreventionMonth, this week's #MomentForYourMindMonday?? is all about emotions! It's not a secret, nor a surprise that an ability to identify and healthily regulate emotions is an important skill for promoting mental health. The unfortunate reality, however, is these skills often aren't taught in childhood, and people reach adulthood without a critical piece of the #SuicidePrevention puzzle. As a therapist (and fellow human being), I have found literature to be an incredible and readily accessible resource to help teach us about emotions. Today's prompt encourages us to dig deep and reflect on a book, be that in children's, young adult, or adult literature, that has helped you in identifying and expressing your emotions. We can all benefit from some new book recommendations, especially when they help us become mentally healthier! Drop your book recommendations in the comments!?? ***If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide, please dial 988 (U.S., Canada), call your local crisis intervention number, or visit the nearest emergency room. . . . #Empowerment #EmpoweredLiving #Journaling #JournalingPrompts #MentalHealth #Wellbeing #MentalHealthAndWellbeing #Literature #ChildrensLiterature #AdultLiterature #YoungAdultLiterature #CopingSkills #Mindfulness #EmotionRegulation

An excellent writeup by fellow preventionist, Dr. Alexander Rohrer, DSocSci! Thank you for your dedication to promoting school safety and educating the public about the critical ways to do so. Keep it up!
School shootings are "not facts of life" and are not inevitable. They are indeed, preventable. While investing in different tools, measures, programs, and initiatives is important, is is equally critical to recognize they all rely on people and more specifically--relationships between people. Thank you to Dr. Peter Langman, Ph.D., Dr. Jillian Peterson, Dr. James Densley, and Dr. Amy Edmondson for their work that helped inform the opinion editorial I authored in LNP Media Group's paper this week. https://lnkd.in/e5KXbrBU
