Steve’s Journey: Strength, Resilience & Independence After an occipital fracture in October 2024, Steve faced challenges impacting his balance, cognition, and coordination. With dedication and help from his therapy team, Carlene Jensen, OTR; Emily Bondarenko, PT; and Antonio Caldwell, SLP, he has made remarkable progress. Physical therapy improved his gait, balance, and mobility, reducing falls. Occupational therapy helped him adapt daily routines for greater independence, while speech therapy strengthened his communication. Cognitive-linguistic exercises further supported memory and processing. Steve’s resilience and commitment to therapy have been inspiring. Stepping Into Independence: A Resident’s Journey Not long ago, this resident relied primarily on a wheelchair to get around. Simple daily tasks felt challenging, and mobility limitations made her hesitant to move freely. But through dedicated therapy with Carina Polanco, PTA and Melinda Francois, COTA/L, she has made incredible progress—now walking independently with a walker, moving effortlessly from the game room to the bistro, and even standing up from chairs without assistance. Beyond mobility, therapy has given her newfound confidence in everyday activities. She now dresses herself using a grabber, gets in and out of the car with ease, and can step into her sister’s garage—something that once seemed impossible. Most importantly, she no longer feels nervous or afraid. Dancing Toward Stability: Inaudy’s Journey with EmpowerMe At The Kensington, Inaudy has always embraced life with energy and enthusiasm. However, experiencing occasional falls throughout the year made her cautious about staying active. With encouragement from her daughter, Maria, she turned to EmpowerMe therapy services to improve her balance—but this time, something was different. Our PT, Lisa Ashe, introduced a creative approach to therapy by incorporating one of Inaudy’s favorite pastimes: salsa dancing! The engaging and joyful sessions not only made therapy fun but also helped strengthen her stability and confidence. Since beginning the program a few months ago, Inaudy hasn’t had a single fall—and now, she’s preparing to graduate from PT stronger than ever. Coaching Confidence: Bruce’s Journey to Greater Independence At Westmont of Cypress, therapy is about more than just exercises—it’s about building confidence and independence. That’s exactly what Syn Amacio, PTA has been doing for Bruce, helping him safely transfer in and out of his daughter’s vehicle so he can continue enjoying baseball games, doctor’s appointments, and lunch outings. Bruce’s progress hasn’t gone unnoticed. “My dad used to have such a hard time getting in and out of the car, but whatever Syn said to him has really stuck, and I am so grateful for her,” his daughter shared. Syn’s simple yet effective guidance—"Sit first, then bring your legs around into the car"—has made all the difference. Regaining Strength and Confidence: Sharon’s Journey with EmpowerMe When Sharon moved into AltaVita Senior Residences?five months ago, she was still adjusting to life after a stroke. A fall early on left her feeling uncertain about her mobility, and she began spending most of her time in her apartment, afraid of another accident. That’s when she was referred to EmpowerMe Wellness for occupational and physical therapy. Over the past three months, Sharon has worked closely with her therapy team to rebuild her strength and confidence. With guidance from her PTA, Melissa Blackwell, she has regained her independence—now using the stationary bike in the community gym twice daily.
