关于我们
Empowering Care Partners provides training and support to those who are living with dementia as well as those who are providing their care. Providing care to someone living with dementia may get a job done, but it fails to see the person as a whole person. We advocate for providing care with those living with dementia. This may be a small word shift, but it is an important distinction that takes into account the values and preferences of the person for whom we are caring. We want to empower people to partner with those living with dementia to provide care so that everyone can have a positive and fulfilling experience.

We had such a great time presenting at the Texas Occupational Therapy Association Annual Conference! We loved sharing skills and information and helping clinicians grow! We got GREAT feedback! Several people commented that the presentation was the best one they attended. Another was an instructor at a university and was there with her students and other instructors. She said she was so glad they all attended, that the students had great takeaways, and even the instructors, as seasoned clinicians, learned new skills as well. Others commented on how we got everyone up and moving and how impactful it was to practice practical skills. Empowering Care Partners CARE with Compassion, Acceptance, Reliability, and Education. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations.?When the person living with dementia (PLwD) has times when they make perfectly good sense and can respond accordingly, it can be difficult to accept a diagnosis of dementia. People may feel like the person is faking or that we have been exaggerating the problem. We are not imagining things—they are just having one of those moments, to be treasured when they occur. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations.?Asking someone, “What would you like for dinner?” may have been a perfectly normal question or conversation. But now, we are asking our loved one to provide an answer to a question that may not be able to do. For example, the person living with dementia (PLwD) may not be able to come up with the words they want to use, or they may not be hungry, or even if they answer, they may not want the food when it is served after all. Offering limited choices of “would you like beef or chicken” encourages the person to eat and helps them to communicate more effectively. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations. Finding the right balance of doing the task with them, not to or for them, can be difficult. We have to find what abilities they still have remaining and help to support them to be successful with these tasks. The nature of dementia and fluidity of their abilities can make it a constant juggle to find the balance, not only in the moment, but day to day as well. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations.?Have a list of things people can do for you. This may include bringing a meal, picking up a prescription, helping trim the plants, or staying with your loved one while you run an errand. It is hard to ask for help. So, accept help when it is offered, and don’t wait until you “really need it” to get it. Empowering Care Partners CARE with Compassion, Acceptance, Reliability, and Education. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations.?The doctor will do simple chit chat and may not pick up on the changes that you are seeing on a daily basis. For example, the doctor won’t know that your loved one has been up all night pacing, is struggling to take their medications as prescribed, or is having difficulty completing basic daily tasks such as taking a shower or brushing their teeth. These are important pieces of information for the doctor to know in order to best support the person living with dementia. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations.?For people living with dementia (PLwD) in the early stages, leaving notes as reminders can sometimes help, but as the disease progresses, this will no longer work. Making environmental changes can help as their dementia progresses. For example, getting a tea kettle with an automatic shut “off” is better than warning someone about leaving the stove on and forgetting about it. For National Family Caregivers Month, we will be sharing some practical advice that can help in difficult situations.?When a person living with dementia (PLwD) is struggling, we tend to either be honest or offer a white lie. However, honesty can lead to distress for us and the one for whom we are caring. Likewise, what we think are little white lies can spiral and become a bigger issue. Take a look at this blog post for examples of how to validate, get curious, and be supportive.?https://lnkd.in/eYYZvE7K Empowering Care Partners CARE with Compassion, Acceptance, Reliability, and Education.
