Roula Sharqawe and I founded Connectome and recently launched our beta, a personal health assistant app that aims to reduce overwhelm for people living with chronic illness. Now that we've emerged from stealth, I’m happy to finally share that for the past several months, I've partnered with the amazing team at Connectome as their Patient Experience & Engagement Advisor! ?? I’ve had the privilege of guiding the founders from the ideation process onward. In my role as their Patient Experience and Engagement Advisor, I provide expert insights into the patient journey to shape the design and development of our innovative healthcare management app geared toward the needs of chronic illness patients. I collaborate with them to co-design, integrate, and facilitate intentional patient engagement strategies into their innovation process so that patients are actively involved at every stage. My goal is to support founders Roula Sharqawe and Ben Zarras in ensuring that our platform not only meets the real needs of patients but also empowers them to manage their health with clarity and confidence, my exact mission and reason for founding Empower Health Strategies. Behind the Scenes with Meredith Mangold ??? ? In our full conversation, Meredith and I tackled an overlooked issue in healthcare: the unexpected consequences of digital patient portals. I pointed out how patients are rarely guided on how to use portals effectively. Many patients end up overusing this resource, contributing to physician burnout and impersonal care.?? Meredith acknowledged the complexity of the problem, and shared her thoughts: ? ??? “There’s no easy answer... That's one of the reasons why I believe in collaboration and bringing as many stakeholders into the room as possible. Collaboration—getting providers, innovators, insurers, and biotech specialists to the table—can help us facilitate a more fluid, effective, compassionate healthcare system.” ? This was the last thing 20-year-old Meredith Mangold, CPXP expected… [Part 1] To go from a bright-eyed college sophomore studying Arabic literature at a prestigious university to a terrified, newly diagnosed Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patient about to undergo life-saving emergency surgeries. Even more unexpected? This major life disruption would someday propel her to launch Empower Health Strategies, a patient experience and engagement consultancy firm. Years after her initial IBD diagnosis, Meredith’s mission today is to emphasize the power of amplifying patients’ voices and the importance of participatory medicine. This means patients should (and deserve to) be full and active participants in their healthcare journey. But Meredith saw a gap in what digital health innovators were creating for patients, and what patients actually NEEDED to be truly empowered. So she chose to go straight to the source by working with digital health professionals to identify truly patient-centric solutions.
