Emporia Employee Spotlight: Luke Soderquist At Emporia, we love highlighting the people behind the technology that’s making home energy management smarter and more efficient. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Luke Soderquist, a Cloud Developer, who joined Emporia straight out of CU Boulder. His journey from a tough job market to working on cutting-edge energy tech is one of persistence, passion, and purpose. Q: How did you first connect with Emporia? Luke: I first connected with Emporia at a CU Boulder career fair. The opportunity to work with IoT devices, network communications, and cloud technology immediately caught my interest. But what really sealed the deal for me was the chance to make a real impact on homeowners and the environment through innovative energy solutions. Q: What makes your role at Emporia exciting? Luke: The variety. Since joining last June, I’ve worked across multiple platforms and technologies—from cloud infrastructure to Mailchimp integrations and Metabase analytics. I don’t feel like I’m doing the exact same thing every day. The exposure to different technologies has been super valuable and keeps me learning and growing. Q: How would you describe the culture at Emporia? Luke: It’s laid-back but purposeful. We care a ton about what we do and delivering a fantastic product, but I don’t feel constant pressure to be perfect. It’s a place where mistakes are seen as part of learning, and that makes it easy to come in and do great work without unnecessary stress. Q: What trends in energy tech are you most excited about? Luke: Although I’m still new to the industry, I find DERMS (Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems) and EV smart charging integration particularly exciting. The potential to reduce costs and benefit the environment is huge. I’m along for the ride, and it’s an exciting one! Q: What advice would you give to new grads looking for a job in tech? Luke: It’s tough. Don’t get discouraged by rejections—keep applying, keep networking, and keep pushing forward.The right opportunity will come, and persistence is key. Luke’s journey at Emporia is a testament to curiosity, adaptability, and the power of meaningful work.
