Forum President & CEO Gloria Sachdev and Brown University Associate Professor Christopher Whaley recently spoke at the Connecticut Healthcare Affordability Symposium, where business leaders, policymakers, and healthcare advocates explored how the private sector and government can collaborate to reduce healthcare costs. Key insights: ?? A 5% increase in healthcare costs leads to $32M in lost wages, 203 job losses, and $6.8M in lost federal tax revenue (Zack Cooper, Yale School of Public Health). ?? Health insurance deductibles have risen 473% since 2000, outpacing wage growth of 178% (Christopher Whaley). ?? 17% of Hoosiers face medical debt collections, damaging credit and limiting large purchases, such as homes or vehicles (Gloria Sachdev). Examples of states that have had success implementing affordability measures were also shared, including: ?? California:?CalPERS?experienced savings of approximately 20% for many shoppable healthcare services and saw increased quality outcomes by steering patients away from hospitals and toward more cost-effective facilities and ASCs. ?? Oregon: Price caps at 200% of Medicare resulted in a 25% reduction in prices and approximately $50M in savings.
