Scholars engaged in research on politically motivated and organized criminal violence worldwide
关于我们
The Empirical Studies of Conflict (ESOC) is a multi-campus, interdisciplinary network of scholars engaged in research on politically motivated and organized criminal violence worldwide. Currently headquartered at Princeton University, it launched in 2009 at Stanford University in collaboration with the University of California Institute on Conflict and Collaboration (IGCC). ESOC was initially inspired by a desire among its founders to provide evidence-based prescriptions to practitioners wrestling with the challenges of reducing violence and stabilizing conflict zones in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries facing terrorist threats. As ESOC has grown, its substantive focus has broadened. Today, ESOC’s affiliated scholars have broad interests ranging from sub state political violence (e.g., terrorism and civil wars and their effects) to great power conflict, spanning gray zone activities such as disinformation and cyber attacks, and support of governance through economic and political tools. Deadline approaching for ESOC's first conference in Asia! Please send in your papers!
CALL FOR PAPERS Submission Deadline: January 15th, 2025 The Empirical Studies of Conflict network (ESOC) will host its first ever research and policy conference in Asia, held from June 2 to June 4 at National Taiwan University (NTU) in Taipei. Research panels will be held on June 3rd and 4th; an optional opening reception in the evening will be the only formal activity on June 2nd. The program chairs – Renard Sexton (Emory University) and Hans H. Tung (NTU) – welcome submissions on topics related to conflict, broadly defined, from political science, economics and adjacent disciplines. Although all submissions are welcome, papers presented at ESOC meetings tend to be quantitative in nature, with attention to causal inference and strong substantive knowledge of cases. Please note that although submissions that include only an abstract will be reviewed and scored, authors that include full working drafts, or other evidence of concrete progress (e.g. slide deck, pre-analysis plan, partial draft, grant proposal) will receive additional points in the scoring process. Submission: Please submit proposals via Google Form at the link here: https://lnkd.in/g45AiVdG Notification of Acceptance: You will be notified by approximately February 15 if your paper is selected for presentation. Emory University and NTU will cover travel expenses for presenters.

?? How much did Afghanistan’s economy decline after the Taliban’s takeover? ?? New estimates find that Afghanistan's GDP declined about 16% from 2020 to 2022, notably less than World Bank estimates of a 28% decline just in 2021. In their new paper, Till Raphael S?nger, Ethan Kapstein, and Ronnie Sircar use synthetic controls and nightlights data from surrounding countries to complement scarce data since Taliban takeover in 2021 and to adjust for declines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their methodology provides a model for using nightlights data to study economic shifts in data scarce environments. https://lnkd.in/eqHFJeZi
