I particularly loved learning from you re the occupational health of teachers. Teaching is a high-burnout occupation and has been for decades. Conversations about systemic oppression are never easy to facilitate but this team understood the assignment! Waneka Jackson and I had the privilege of supporting the team at Nest last week and I’m still floating on the good vibes from that work. We unpacked the lens of systemic oppression from the National Equity Project. (Great resource if you haven’t seen it!) They interrogated the layers of identity, power and privilege and their impact on sense of inclusion at work. ??? Which sounded like, “This aspect of my identity gives me so much privilege and I wasn’t aware of this before.” ??? And, “We have to be better bystanders. It’s not okay to observe a microagression and not address it, especially if you have greater proximity to power.” ??? And, “I’m so sorry if the way I shared my experience made others who experienced this differently feel like they couldn’t speak up. I recognize the privilege in my whiteness affords me and that my perspective may not be the only one.” They walked away with a richer sense of connection and understanding of places they have hit or missed the mark. ? Don’t mind me, just over here creating the world I want for my children…one where you can work for leaders who do their self-work, embrace difference across their team, own the harm they unintentionally cause and rebuild trust… a world where work doesn’t suck. ?? #transformative #leadership #selfwork #empact #dei #teamculture Rebecca van Bergen Chris van Bergen
