  • In 2024, CIDMATH hosted the Summer Insititute for Statistics, Modeling, and Infectious Diseases (SISMID) for the first time at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, co-directed by Dr. Natalie Dean and Dr. Ben Lopman. From July 15th to July 31st, 2024, 256 participants attended SISMID to be trained in specialized and innovative techniques across the fields of infectious disease epidemiology, modeling, and statistics. “[SISMID] really opened me to different avenues and different people that I wouldn't have interacted with beforehand and different ways that things are being used that aren't necessarily talked about in class,” said SISMID attendee and Rollins MPH student Arnetta McVey Moffatt. Interested in hearing what more participants are saying about SISMID? Check out the full recap on CIDMATH's website! https://lnkd.in/eb3ahmUj Missed last year's session? SISMID will be returning summer 2025 with the first-ever online courses in addition to the in-person session.?More information coming soon!

  • What better way to kick off the new year than to learn something new? ICYMI: check out these podcasts featuring CIDMATH investigators on a variety of public health topics!

Travelling this holiday weekend and need some entertaining education to accompany your trip? We have podcast recommendations for you featuring CIDMATH investigators! ? Health Wanted with Laurel Bristow https://lnkd.in/eBq5PMdX ? Mosquitoes “On this week's episode of Health Wanted, host Laurel Bristow takes a deep dive into the global impact of these needle-nosed nuisances and the new and creative ways scientists like her guest Gonzalo Vazquez-Prokopec, PhD, are swatting them away.” ? Vaccines “This week on Health Wanted, host Laurel Bristow and guest Jodie Guest, PhD, MPH discuss the reasons behind vaccine hesitancy, the risks and benefits of getting vaccinated, and how vaccines can be better distributed to populations in times of need.” ? Ode to Sewers “This week on Health Wanted, host Laurel Bristow and guest Marlene Wolfe, PhD discuss the evolution of sewers and the role of wastewater surveillance in public health.” ? ? Winter Respiratory Viruses “On this week's episode of Health Wanted, host Laurel Bristow and guest Ben Lopman, PhD, talk about what diseases to look out for this fall and the challenges of developing vaccines for certain types of illnesses.” Virulent Vortex, hosted by Jaap de Roode https://lnkd.in/eRjteQKB S1E1 – “Lance Waller proclaims his love for maps, explains what it means to study infectious diseases across scales, and describes how maps can help save people from pathogens.” S1E5 – “Ben Lopman has long studied how to optimize vaccination against rotavirus, which causes severe diarrheal disease in children. In this episode of the Virulent Vortex, he explains how his work on rotavirus set him up well to understand the unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic and helped him create epidemiological models to optimize social distancing and vaccination. As he discusses, lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic should help us thwart future global outbreaks.” ? S1E6 – “Katia Koelle explains how pigs provide the ideal mixing vessels for bird flu viruses to create strains that are highly contagious. Vaccinating pigs or limiting contact between pigs and birds could help prevent the next pandemic.” ? S2E3 – “Natalie Dean explains how her studies of Ebola outbreaks in west Africa provided insights into ring vaccination and pandemic preparedness, with lessons for COVID-19 and future pandemics. She also discusses the difficulties of communicating science and the importance of acknowledging uncertainty.”

  • We are excited to share CIDMATH’s Wastewater Epidemiology research! The team is led by co-PI Dr. Katia Koelle. CIDMATH investigators are working on multiple projects to develop advanced methods and tools using wastewater samples and data: The Shedding Hub: led by Dr. Yuke Wang, the Shedding Hub is an open science portal that aims to improve the use and accessibility of shedding and wastewater data. The Shedding Hub can be found on Github: https://lnkd.in/ehwpHtVM Sample Sequencing: led by Dr. Anne Piantadosi in collaboration with Dr. Marlene Wolfe's lab, the team uses samples from partners like Georgia Department of Public Health to advance sequencing techniques for wastewater. The machine learning team utilizes wastewater data and other surveillance data to develop machine learning for disease forecasting. Machine Learning is one of CIDMATH’s core research pillars, and we will be sharing more details in 2025! For more on CIDMATH’s research, you can use the link in bio to follow all our social media and check out our website cidmath.org

  • Sewer systems may not be the first place?that comes to mind when we think about public health,?but they are an important source of infectious disease?information. Wastewater Epidemiology is?one of CIDMATH’s core pillars. Next week we will be sharing details on CIDMATH’s wastewater research, but first – what is wastewater epi? Check out this infographic to learn more about how viruses and bacteria can travel from a person ???to wastewater ?? to the laboratory ???to inform public health decision making! You can find more detailed graphics on Instagram @emory_cidmath and learn more on our website cidmath.org/research ?? Stay tuned for more on wastewater next week!?

  • PI Spotlight: Allison Chamberlain, Co-Principal Investigator of CIDMATH Dr. Chamberlain is an infectious disease epidemiologist with a background in biodefense, public health preparedness and public health practice. She is a research associate professor in the department of Epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and also serves as director of Emory Center for Public Health Preparedness and Research. She advises the Emory Student Outbreak Response Team (SORT) and the Outbreak Analytics Fellows that are part of?CIDMATH’s training efforts.? ? A goal of CIDMATH is to bridge the gap between academics and public health practitioners. According to Dr. Chamberlain, CIDMATH “brings Emory’s expertise even more closely aligned with the practitioners so that we can help them advance their skills. We also will learn from them about how they conduct surveillance for different diseases and what data points they often collect or can’t collect. This will help us refine our models and what we’re collectively attempting to do, which is prevent future pandemics.”? ? In addition to our 4 co-PIs, over 20 co-investigators provide their expertise to CIDMATH’s work. Find out more here ?? https://lnkd.in/gTCiaRUQ? Rollins Epidemiology Fellowship Program
