?? We’re excited to announce that #Ecuador has become the first national government in the #Amazon region to sign a LEAF Coalition agreement to receive climate finance. ?? The agreement, worth $30 million, recognizes and rewards the country's efforts to tackle deforestation and forest degradation and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the forestry sector. ?? The funds will be used to finance programs that reduce #deforestation, with benefits equitably shared through a participatory process involving Indigenous Peoples, Afro-Ecuadorian, Montubio, and local communities, and other territorial actors. ?? This milestone highlights the potential of public-private #collaboration to drive large-scale, high-integrity action against deforestation. ?? Amazon has just announced a new carbon credit service, enabling access to high-quality credits for qualified companies. We are delighted to see the #LEAFCoalition highlighted as part of Amazon’s approach – a $1+billion public-private initiative founded to protect tropical forests at the scale and with the urgency the #climate crisis demands. LEAF - coordinated by Emergent - works with entire jurisdictions through Jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD) to address the causes of tropical #deforestation at scale, ensuring long-term benefits to the climate and local communities. ?? We welcome this move by Amazon to make high-integrity credits more accessible, and look forward to seeing how this initiative accelerates climate finance to the frontlines of forest protection. ??? “The long-term goal, as Mulligan sees it, is not to protect specific areas of forest but to change the local economy so that forest protection becomes the best economic outcome for everyone involved. “We’re not here to get credits,” he said. “We’re here to use credits to try to catalyze systems change.”” Jim Giles of Trellis Group recently sat down with Jamey Mulligan, Head of Carbon Neutralization Science & Strategy at Amazon, to discuss Amazon's focus on building new systems for protecting and restoring forests. Mulligan emphasizes that the LEAF Coalition’s jurisdictional approach - where funds are channelled directly to forest governments - allows for the implementation of policies that reduce #deforestation. This includes economic support for Indigenous Populations and local communities, ultimately transforming the local economy so that #ForestConservation becomes the most beneficial economic outcome for all. ?? ?? Is the debate over carbon credit "durability" delaying real #ClimateAction? ? In a recent Trellis Group article,?Lucy Almond explores how a narrow focus on carbon credit "durability" may be distracting from urgent action needed today.? ? Providing critical insights into the science behind natural #carbon sinks and why they are essential to global #climate mitigation, Lucy discusses misconceptions around carbon removal #permanence that ultimately delay urgent investments in #ForestProtection and other vital solutions - only serving to increase climate risk. ? "The notion that carbon storage is only valuable if it lasts forever ignores how climate systems function. Even in the face of wildfires, pests, droughts and storms, forests and wetlands have stored carbon reliably for millennia. While individual trees may die, forests recover, absorb and retain carbon over long periods - sometimes for thousands of years." ? "It’s also important to understand that even if some carbon storage is limited to a few decades, it still delivers significant benefits by reducing peak warming and delaying irreversible tipping points. This buys crucial time to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and advance technological carbon removal solutions."? ? ?? In a recent Devex opinion piece, Kisaro Thomas Lombutwa?of the Masai community in Tanzania wrote about his experience of #CarbonCredits and the ways in which his community has benefited from them.? ? Kisaro Thomas explains that to his community, land is of utmost importance,?which #carbon revenue has helped to secure, lessening the financial stresses on the community and allowing them to invest in their children’s education and futures. “It’s in everyone’s interest to stop deforestation. Globally, it’s a necessary part of mitigating climate change. Locally, more standing trees also mean more credits — and more credit sales mean more revenue to spend on our village projects such as building classrooms and school dormitories.” ??
