  • Congratulations, Michael Gips! ?? We continue to draw inspiration from our co-founders' efforts to make a genuine, lasting impact on life safety and security for all. ??

I've found a new home! This picture captures one of my last days at ASIS International, as I was on the cusp of a new journey--starting my own consulting firm, Global Insights in Professional Security (GIPS). The badges not only reflect a lot of conference attendance, but they also prefigure the dynamic and peripatetic experience of the last five years. It's been a wonderful road, and the firm has built strong partnerships, but I missed the stability of a well-respected employer. That's all a prelude to announcing that I've joined Kroll as a Managing Director in their ESRM unit. I'll be privileged to work alongside outstanding professionals in an elite firm. My years as a Chief Knowledge and Learning Officer at ASIS infusing ESRM into the content, standards, learning, and culture there teed me up nicely for this role. I will continue to provide services in strategic consulting, risk assessment, ESRM implementation, convergence, content creation, litigation support/expert witness duties, thought leadership, research, etc. Many thanks to Kroll for adapting the role to my skills, abilities, experience, network, and professional persona. As such, I'm not disappearing from the greater security world. I will remain active on LinkedIn. I will continue to vigorously support the #securityprofession, enhance standards of practice, participate in security associations, serve on boards, mentor and advise security professionals, help colleagues find jobs, generate content, publish research, present at conferences and webinars, etc.. But this time with the tremendous authority, expertise, reputation, insight, and wisdom that Kroll brings to bear. For some of you who have approached my company over the last five years, I lacked the resources to take on larger projects. Now I have an expert team with a deep bench and deeper knowledge. Reach back out to me and let's talk.

An outstanding article in Rolling Stone about the challenges of emergency alerts and notifications. https://lnkd.in/eS9Spx3M I love this quote from the article—it explains why we encourage our customers to conduct drills on Share911 and empower a wide variety of employees to sound the alarm during a drill. The moment you hear gunshots, see smoke or fire or are having a medical, that's not the time to "figure it out"; that's what drill mode is for!

  • Another good reason for authenticated voiceprint as a less-burdensome, more effective multifactor solution for end users. ??

  • Fascinating results from Campus Safety's deep dive report on panic buttons and mobile duress systems/apps: https://lnkd.in/e7KTPkyE So many of the limitations can be addressed with voice verification and speech verification in terms of convenience, availability, and effectiveness. Here are some of the comments about fixed panic alarms, all of which can be avoided or resolved with MyVoice: ? Clinical teammates take the pendants home, lose them or let them go dead ? Getting staff members to carry their alarm activation cards in a manner to reduce false alarms. Having staff and students take the training seriously! ? The challenge is having people use the panic alarm when appropriate. ? Don’t like how it only has the two buttons, clicks are confusing ? We have an international population as well as school aged visitors and not everyone understands what the technology is for. Sometimes fixed duress buttons are activated more like door bells than [for] emergencies. ? Biggest drawback is false alarms. A simple sliding cover over the fob would be a huge improvement. Don’t want to end up with slow response times due to crying wolf too often. ? Issues in the past with a phone app: Little to no cell service and spotty Wifi. Hard wired buttons not in outdoor areas. ? Outdated systems for fixed and wireless buttons. ? In 30 years of emergency service, I have received hundreds of panic alarm activations, and only one was intentional and valid. Mobile or portable technology does not always meet Kayleigh’s law requirements and can result in responders going to the wrong location. In short, panic buttons give a false sense of security and take up resources better used on prevention and response. Most security professionals I’ve collaborated with think they’re of very limited use in any practical sense. ? Wi-Fi faults ? Mobile app not specific on floor/area when activated inside building Mobile app and wearable devices for community staff are unreliable, staff do not value the app- placed on a work provided device leads to issues finding the app and using it (after having to put an 8 digit passcode into open the device). Staff confidence is low- the associated wearable device is unreliable (paired via Bluetooth and frequently disconnects without alerting it has disconnected, needs batteries but limited ways of checking the battery)

  • https://lnkd.in/gp3MfGan “Conversations around 911 failures often focus on deaths — understandably so. Those are the cases the public hears about. Those are the cases that make headlines and fuel lawsuits. But the stories that D.C. council members heard Thursday offer a glimpse of what often goes unseen. They show how unanswered 911 calls and dispatch delays can have long-lasting repercussions, even when a person survives.” 911 systems around the country are understaffed or broken. The toll on lives and health is enormous. We need a more efficient system that sends verified distress calls straight to first responders—a system that works with Next Generation 911. That’s part of the value proposition of ETG’s MyVoice, in which your voice and phrase can instantly summon aid anywhere and any time. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/ejZzjeBZ
