Right now is both the scariest and most exciting time to be in VC. Fear and excitement share nearly identical physiological responses—racing heart, heightened awareness, and adrenaline surge. The only real difference is how our brains interpret these sensations. This emotional paradox perfectly mirrors what's happening in the market today. We're seeing companies grow faster than ever before, reaching revenue milestones in months that used to take years. But alongside that exhilaration comes legitimate fear: How long will this hypergrowth continue? What will retention look like? What could AGI bring? These are unknowns that nobody has answers to because the underlying technology and market are evolving at insane speeds. But in reality, VC thrives in moments of disruption. During periods of stasis, it's harder to find truly outlier opportunities. This is precisely when the next generation of iconic companies gets built. I talked through this and more yesterday with Eric on the Tech Today podcast following Emergence Capital’s $1B Fund VII announcement. We chat about why we're doubling down on B2B software despite (or because of) AI, why we’ve chosen to remain focused on early-stage opportunities, and why the HR model in venture is broken. Listen below.

When I founded Emergence Capital in 2003, it was with a simple but radical belief: that the most important companies of our time would be the ones transforming the way the world works. After founding Software As Service with Marc Benioff, I saw firsthand that SaaS would lead the next transformation. Back then, the idea of betting on SaaS founders at the earliest stages wasn’t obvious. But we believed—and continue to believe—that supporting transformational builders with deep focus, conviction, and partnership could truly bend the odds of success. Today, I’m proud to share that Emergence has raised Emergence VII—a $1 billion fund dedicated to exactly that mission. Over the past 20+ years, we’ve had the privilege to partner with some of the most iconic B2B companies of our generation—from Salesforce, to Veeva Systems, to BILL, to Doximity, to Zoom—and have built a track record that reflects the power of our model: ??Over 1-in-5 grow beyond $1 billion valuations ??Over 1-in-10 go public ??Over $8B in realized returns on under $2B invested—fueling meaningful philanthropic impact across cancer research, climate change, and beyond. We’ve done it with a unique approach: Each Partner invests in just one company per year, ensuring the level of care and commitment that every founder deserves. And with zero Partner turnover in our history, our promise of long-term partnership isn’t just a value—it’s a track record. Emergence VII is a continuation of the same vision that inspired me to start this firm. If you’re building at the intersection of AI and the future of work, we’d be honored to meet you. Let’s keep bending the odds—together.

Announcing Emergence VII: A $1 billion fund dedicated to supporting the next generation of iconic B2B companies reshaping the future of work. For over two decades, Emergence has invested in visionary founders who turned emerging ideas into iconic businesses—from Marc Benioff at Salesforce, who pioneered cloud software, to Eric S. Yuan at Zoom, who redefined communication. With Fund VII, we’re doubling down on our track record of bending the odds: ??Over 9-in-10 of early-stage investments successfully raise follow-on rounds. ??Over 1-in-5 surpass $1 billion valuations. ??Over 1-in-10 have become publicly traded companies. Emergence's approach is intentional and hands-on, with each Partner investing in just one founder annually—ensuring deep, focused support across strategy, talent, and growth. With zero Partner turnover, the team you partner with today remains with you from early stages through IPO and beyond. If you're a founder building at the intersection of AI and work, we'd love to meet you. Big week for Arcee AI! Yesterday, we officially launched Conductor, but that’s not all - Spectrum research, developed in part by our heads of research Fernando Fernandes Neto and Lucas Atkins, was also cited by Meta! Exciting to see this work recognized in the broader AI research community. Check out the paper here: https://lnkd.in/grPmbdHm
