On March 7, 1965, civil rights activists in Selma, Alabama, were brutally attacked as they peacefully marched for voting rights. Bloody Sunday became a defining moment in the fight for justice, leading to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Just weeks later, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. carried that same spirit of resistance to Boston, leading thousands in the 1965 Freedom Rally on Boston Common—his only civil rights march in the Northeast. As we honor the legacy of those who marched in Selma, we also look ahead to the 60th anniversary of the 1965 Freedom Rally in Boston on April 26, 2025. Join us as we commemorate this historic moment and recommit to the fight for equity and justice.

Boston has lost a giant. Embrace Boston joins the city in mourning the loss of Fletcher "Flash" Wiley, a trailblazing attorney, civic leader, and tireless advocate for justice. A decorated Air Force veteran, Wiley made history as the first Black football player at the U.S. Air Force Academy before earning both a law degree and a master's in public policy from Harvard. His leadership extended far beyond the legal field—he was a champion for and mentor to countless young leaders, and a pillar of institutions like the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, where he served as its first Black chairman. Wiley’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and opportunity. His vision helped shape a more inclusive Boston, and his impact will continue to be felt for generations. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those who were inspired by his work. May we honor his memory by continuing the fight for justice and community empowerment.

Dr. Jay Williams, @bostonmlkbreakfast @unionboston, and everyone who joined us to announce that 2026 will mark the start of a full weekend honoring Dr. King’s legacy. Looking forward to next year when we can gather together and continue to celebrate, inspire, and uplift our community and each other.
