🔭 Unlocking the power of OpenTelemetry for Android ANRs 📱 Application Not Responding (ANR) errors are a nightmare for mobile developers and users alike. These occur when the Android UI thread is blocked for over 5 seconds, leaving users frustrated (and apps at risk of bad reviews and lower store rankings). 😱 In a recent The New Stack article, Jamie Lynch, Software Engineer at Embrace, dives into: ✅ What ANRs are and why they’re critical to address. ✅ The challenges of capturing ANR telemetry on Android. ✅ How we modeled ANR data with OTel to simplify and enhance our observability capabilities. 📍 Read Jamie's full article here ➔ https://lnkd.in/g2gkrMaU #ANR #ANRs #OpenTelemetry #AndroidDevelopment #OTel #MobileObservability #Mobile #DevOps #SRE #Observability #ModernObservability #MobileApps #opensource #SDK #Android #AppPerformance

Hey Folks! I've opened up some time to chat about mobile, observability, mobile observability, dad jokes, and other topics that are top of mind. I'm offering my time to chat with whomever wants to grow reliable mobile systems, and can help make the mo11y community grow! Check out my calendar here https://lnkd.in/ezaAKNdF. Please note that I'm not a salesperson or recruiter for Embrace, nor am I actively recruiting for any of our open positions. I respect your time and hope you'll respect mine!

📱🌪️ Mobile apps are chaotic systems—operating on diverse devices, unpredictable runtimes, unstable networks, and varying user behaviors. Behind all of this complexity, 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 plays a critical role in aggregating and interpreting mobile data. Check out the latest article on The New Stack by David Rifkin and Juan Carrillo, exploring why observing mobile systems is a completely different challenge compared to backend monitoring—and why accounting for time is essential to enhancing user experiences. 📍 Read the full article here ➔ https://lnkd.in/gwXQqFtF #OpenTelemetry #OTel #MobileObservability #Mobile #DevOps #SRE #Observability #ModernObservability #MobileApps #opensource #SDK #Android #IOS #AppPerformance #MobileData

This is wild (to me at least!) I dug a level deeper into OpenTelemetry progress on the mobile app front. It turns out Embrace recently released open source native mobile SDK's that can send OTel spans and logs directly to any backend that supports OpenTelemetry. I almost didn't believe it, so I set up a test with a brand new observability tool called Dash0 and made an iOS app to see if it all works. Follow along in the screenshot.

🎧 NEW PODCAST! Embrace's President/CPO Andrew Tunall joined Ash Patel on The Reliability Enablers (SREpath) podcast to shed some light on the state of mobile observability today. If you're looking for an honest take on what reliability teams often overlook—especially in mobile—this is a must-listen! 🎧 ⭐ Highlights include: ↔️ 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Andrew discusses how current tools often miss app performance data essential to user experience. He hones in on the importance of focusing on user-centric reliability to ensure apps perform well at the brand's primary consumer touchpoint, which is increasingly mobile. 🔍 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀: He explores the concept of “answerability,” where observability systems should help engineers across teams solve problems rather than just collect data. ⚡ 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝘃𝘀.𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: Has "big observability" overemphasized backend issues at the expense of frontend? While traditional observability hones in on uptime, Andrew sees a gap in capturing issues that affect user experience, underscoring the need for end-to-end observability. 📍 Check out the full episode! https://lnkd.in/grqMnmse #Podcast #SREpath #OpenTelemetry #OTel #MobileObservability #Mobile #DevOps #SRE #Observability #ModernObservability #MobileApps #opensource #AppPerformance

I'm thrilled to share my promotion to President at Embrace! It’s an honor to take on this role, leading our outstanding team through our evolution into the leader in OpenTelemetry for frontend and mobile engineering. I’m energized for what lies ahead as we collaborate with the open source community on the future of mobile app and web performance.⚡️ I started taking on the role this summer, and it comes as we celebrate our strongest financial quarter in two years📈, with momentum building toward our best quarter ever in Q4. Our whole team has been building to this - here are a few of the highlights: - With the launch of our industry-leading Embrace Distribution for OpenTelemetry 🔭 , we’re empowering SRE, DevOps, and mobile teams to work together on shared, user-centric SLOs - Proving the need for user-centric SLOs, one of the world’s largest grocers recently chose Embrace to help their teams collaborate around creating an incredible search, purchase and delivery experience, not just measuring individual, disconnected pieces of the puzzle - We launched a partnership with Grafana Labs, ensuring mobile engineers play a pivotal role in modern observability, and are seeing incredible traction as we jointly endeavor to give customers better value and more insight, at lower costs than legacy vendors From my time at Amazon Web Services (AWS), I became a huge fan of the ALP of “Hire and Develop the Best.” I’m eager to raise the bar by adding top talent. Check out our Careers Page (https://lnkd.in/g5ciE_-u), and feel free to reach out if you or someone in your network could be a great fit! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our success so far – let’s make the next chapter even more remarkable! 🚀 #OpenTelemetry #OTel #MobileObservability #Mobile #DevOps #SRE #Observability #Startup #Hiring Aaron Jacobson Dan Wright Eric Futoran Dana Settle Hadley Harris Baris Aksoy Fredric Newberg New Enterprise Associates (NEA) Y Combinator
