🤔 Did you know that mobile observability requires user session context that backend data can’t provide? When you are monitoring endpoints, you have little context about the users. 🫣 While a spike in latency or failures is an indicator that there’s a problem (e.g., an increase in 500s on a purchase endpoint), there are many questions that are difficult to answer by just looking at the backend data, such as: ❓ If your endpoint serves multiple clients (e.g., web and mobile), how are you isolating the impact to devices and users? ❓ Is a subset of users experiencing a large percentage of the total issues? ❓ How do you know what latency is acceptable? At what latency, and for which endpoints, do you see an impact on key business metrics? ❓ How will your backend monitoring surface issues that don’t involve a network failure, e.g., payload parsing issues on the client or duplicate, redundant network calls causing user-perceived latency even though the individual calls are within SLO bounds? Monitoring an endpoint as a source of truth for issues only tells part of the story. What really matters is what the app user experiences.
