??Human rights standards are only as strong as their implementation. At Embode, our team is committed to translating abstract #humanrights principles into action and that’s exactly what James Eckford does! As a Consultant, James works at the intersection of policy and practice, ensuring that human rights due diligence isn’t just a checklist exercise but provides actionable and scalable real-world solutions. In global supply chains, applying human rights standards is not an easy task as workers' experiences vary dramatically based on diverse contexts and complex realities on the ground. After graduating with a Human Rights degree in Venice and spending three years teaching in China, James worked for seven years in Thailand, working with the United Nations, international and national NGOs on issues such as child protection, forced labour, and migration. His lived experiences working directly with migrant communities, refugees and businesses allows him to integrate human rights due diligence into impactful and pragmatic solutions that centres people.? James will be speaking at the Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Rights in Asia Conference on March 19 in Bangkok on the importance of rights-holder and community engagement to realize sustainable supply chain operations that upholds the rights and well-being of workers. The event is organized by UNDP in partnership with @UNEP, UNICEF and IUCN and will provide a platform for business leaders, policy makers and civil society representatives to discuss environmental and human rights challenges. ?? ?? Our Director of Consulting, Erik van Os, joined industry leaders as a panellist at "Safeguarding Your Supply Chain: Understanding Human Rights Due Diligence Challenges" on 15 January in Kuala Lumpur. ??Businesses around the world are under increasing pressure to champion inclusivity, integrity, and sustainability in their supply chains, with a strong emphasis on labour rights. The event provided opportunities for sustainability professionals to explore strategies for safeguarding the human rights of workers in supply chains. During the event, Erik introduced The #GanapatiInitiative —a collaborative programme designed to strengthen HRDD across supply chains through supplier engagement in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore. This initiative by Embode takes a systems-building, hands-on approach to enhancing supplier capabilities in responsible recruitment and labour practices. The event was organised by APAC GATES, Thomson Reuters Foundation, and the Head of Services of the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry | AHK Malaysia. ?? As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the steps we must take to ensure fairer, more ethical recruitment practices across global supply chains. Developing Sustainable Supply Chains | SCR? | Senior Sustainability Manager, APAC at adm Group| Cleaning up beaches one bottle at a time
Last month, I had the privilege of participating in the AIM-Progress?APAC Hub events in Bangkok, where we connected with diverse stakeholders to reflect on the human impact of supply chain challenges. The first event, organized by Embode, on behalf of AIM-Progress, in partnership with the NGO ‘Migrant Working Group (MWG) Thailand’, was a Community Event where we had the honor of hearing directly from 14 migrant workers from Myanmar and Cambodia. With the help of excellent Burmese and Khmer translators, workers shared their migration journeys, the financial and systemic challenges they face including those related to worker permits and recruitment fees, as well as their unique aspirations for the future. For me, one of the most striking moments was hearing workers' calls for corporations to invest in local opportunities in Cambodia, reducing the need for migration. As APAC Hub members, we were reminded that behind every data point in our supply chains are real human stories, and these personal testimonials deeply resonated with everyone present. Members took back valuable feedback from the workers, vowing to collaborate with their Thai supplier partners to improve conditions and, as a Hub, to work on projects addressing these challenges across supply chains in the coming year. Later, at the AIM-Progress APAC Regional Hub Members Meeting, hosted by my co-chair Baiboon Sakulkaruna-Ar-Ree from Reckitt, we reflected on insights from the Community Event and discussed practical steps for addressing human rights challenges in the region. Our guest speaker Ohnmar Ei Ei Chaw, a dedicated migrant rights professional, generously presented to the APAC Hub members about the experiences, cases, and remediation needs for migrant workers in Thailand. We also took this in-person meeting opportunity to brainstorm and draft APAC Hub’s Strategy as well as Learning Events for the upcoming year. These discussions highlighted the critical role of collaboration in developing sustainable and responsible supply chains within the context of the APAC region. Thank you to AIM-Progress, Embode, the Migrant Working Group Thailand, and all the APAC Hub members for making these events so impactful. I am inspired by the momentum we created through these in-person encounters and look forward to working together to drive meaningful progress. Aarti Kapoor Yael Fattal Lariccia??? Human Rights is a concept enshrined in law. But how are human rights experienced? Watch this 15-minute provoking keynote by Aarti Kapoor where she breaks down the concept of human rights to make meaningful impact. Source: A Sight for Freedom, Keynote Address. Putting People First Agenda at the Better Cotton Annual Conference, Istanbul, June 2024. #humanrights #humanfreedoms
#HUMANRIGHTS IS A CONCEPT, a label, enshrined in law. What does it mean in reality for people? What is the #experience of it for people? In my practice, particularly in Asia and Africa, in contexts where, at moments, 'rights-language' does not conjure up inspiration, but fear or resistance, there are many occasions where I don't use the term at all. To do so would set back the agenda to #makeadifference. Whether I use the term 'Human Rights' all depends on whether it is helpful, in the moment and situation. I ask myself, does this language further #dignity, #duty and #diligence to care and protect people and planet? In my roles in civil society, government and industry, I have seen time and time again where I need to use language which is more meaningful and relatable to who I am talking to and where I am. I ask myself, where can I find #commonground? What language would energise and inspire and bring the same results? #HUMANFREEDOM: When talking about the #bigpicture, one of my favourite terms (of many) is '#freedom'. This is because human dignity is enabled by freedoms, choices and #resources. And those freedoms are, in turn, enabled by #responsibleinstitutions, that do their job properly when they deliver on their duties with diligence and authority. Make sense? This short keynote speech gives a snapshot of what I mean. It was delivered after a moving testimony by a Pakistani cotton farmer, Amna Bibi. Thank you Better Cotton for your blessing in letting me share this speech in full. It represents the vision I hold, and endeavour to imbue in the work of Embode. Better Cotton held a powerful and deeply energising Annual Conference in Istanbul this year. I was invited to give the Key Note speech at the opening of the '#PuttingPeopleFirst' Agenda. The conference delivered its promise not just because it was #first on the agenda, but because it brought together all elements of the #systemsapproach and the #vision. Leyla S. Last week, as part of the AIM-Progress APAC hub event in Thailand, we had the privilege of listening to and learning from 14 migrant workers, primarily from Myanmar and a few from Cambodia. This experience was a powerful reminder that behind statistics and data are real human beings with unique, often staggering stories. Thanks to Embode’s facilitation, including icebreakers and trust-building activities, these workers felt safe to share their experiences openly. Through translations from Burmese and Khmer, we heard honest testimonials about their journeys—fleeing their homes, bearing the financial strain of brokers, and navigating life in host countries as well as their dreams for the future and hope. This event, organised in collaboration with the Migrant Working Group Thailand, underscored the importance of meaningful stakeholder engagement which is truly listening to those at the center of human rights challenges and using their insights to drive actionable change.
