This month, in honor of Women's History Month, we proudly highlight Swiss women whose contributions have made a lasting impact worldwide — especially those with ties to the U.S. Today, we’re excited to introduce Gertrud Lutz-Fankhauser. Originally from the Swiss region of Emmental, Gertrud Lutz-Fankhauser dedicated her life to humanitarian efforts. In search of adventure, she emigrated to the U.S. in 1929 at the age of 18, where she spent several years working at the Swiss Consulate in St. Louis, Missouri, where she met the Swiss diplomat, Carl Lutz, whom she married in 1935. Lutz-Fankhauser was recognized as 'Righteous Among the Nations' for supporting her husband in rescuing over 60,000 Jews during World War II, during which time they were living in Budapest, Hungary. After returning to Switzerland, she led a distinguished career with UNICEF, serving as its Vice-President and Director for Europe and North Africa. Lutz-Fankhauser remained a dedicated humanitarian until her death in 1995. This month, in honor of Women's History Month, we proudly highlight Swiss women whose contributions have made a lasting impact worldwide — especially those with ties to the U.S. Today, we’re excited to introduce Marthe Gosteli, a pioneering suffrage activist born in 1917 near the Swiss capital city of Bern. In the mid-20th century, she spent over a decade as the Head of the Film Division at the U.S. Embassy in Switzerland and subsequently served as President of the Association of Swiss Women’s Associations for the Political Rights of Women. Gosteli played a crucial role in the 1971 referendum that granted Swiss women the right to vote and, later in life, she dedicated herself to preserving the history of Swiss women by founding the Gosteli Foundation in 1982. Her remarkable contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including the Swiss Human Rights Award in 2011. Gosteli passed away in 2017 at the age of 99, leaving behind a powerful legacy of advocacy.
