Earlier this year, Ematai relaunched and expanded the mission from the former Halachic Organ Donation Society. Ematai’s goal is to empower and support Jews navigating their healthcare journeys with Jewish wisdom. Our mission is to address the full range of opportunities and choices presented by aging, end-of-life treatment, and organ donation. Ematai (“If not now, when?”) is a call to action. We seek to upstream the necessary conversations that will facilitate meaningful choices later in life. Ematai helps individuals and their families anticipate the questions they’ll need to answer as they continue on their healthcare journey. Ematai also explores the big moral questions that society needs to face as technological revolutions change the human experience. We are here to demonstrate how Jewish wisdom responds to the ethical dilemmas often found in healthcare innovation. To this highly relevant moral frontier, Ematai brings together rabbis, healthcare professionals, ethicists, and communal leaders to represent Judaism with a wise and nuanced voice. We have several important initiatives that we are working on: -Netivot, a new advance directive and conversation guide for the Jewish community -Option 18, our Organ Donation Initiative -Realtime consultation line -Hospital Prayers -Rabbinic Training -Educational Resources We invite you to visit our website - www.ematai.org to learn more! #advancecareplanning #organdonation #jewisheducation #endoflifecare

?? For Them I Weep As Tisha B'Av approaches, we are all thinking of the recent and ongoing communal tragedy. This year we have created a memorial poster with the names of the victims of 10.7 and the Iron Swords War. The names are accompanied by the powerful line of Kina 38, "Rise and let us cry, and shed a sea of tears, which will flow like rivers from my eyes to yours." This 36 x 48 sized poster can be printed at your local print shop and hung up in your synagogue or community center. It is our hope that the poster serves as a powerful and meaningful symbol of what the Jewish people are mourning this Tisha B'Av. You can download the poster from our website - https://lnkd.in/dhx64gHt Please share this post ??

?What are the Jewish perspectives on preimplantation genetic diagnosis? ?Can we test embryos and only implant those that are free of genetic diseases? ?What about testing embryos and choosing gender or eye color? ?? Rabbi Brody's recent article “Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis & Halacha," published in The Jerusalem Post, clarifies all of these questions. Did you know that our Netivot advance directive also includes a conversation guide? The conversation guide helps you navigate important, but often difficult, discussions about your healthcare goals and wishes with your family/proxy. The conversation guide is not legally binding. It provides insight and clarity to your loved ones who may eventually find themselves making challenging decisions on your behalf. Is it a gift to them to have these critical conversations ahead of time. You can download the conversation guide by itself (ematai.org/netivot) if you've already signed an advance directive. Or download the combined PDF with the advance directive and the conversation guide.

An exciting and successful event about brain death and organ donation in the Jewish community that we were thrilled to be a part of! Thank you to Rabbi Jason Weiner, BCC, OneLegacy, Cedars-Sinai, and the Board of Rabbis of Southern California.
Today we partnered with Ematai , Board of Rabbis of Southern California & OneLegacy to bring a group of Rabbis and Chaplains into our Cedars-Sinai Simulation Center to participate in brain death testing on a (fake) patient in our ICU, and then engaged in the posthumous organ retrieval process in the OR! We also heard from an organ recipient. These are fascinating and relevant topics to read about or lecture on, but the opportunity to actually engage hands on with healthcare professionals and in the clinical environment lends an entirely unique perspective and appreciation.
