In the MegaCharge - charging infrastructure for heavy transport project, we′ve gathered players from the entire value chain to develop high-power charging solutions and infrastructure that will speed up the electrification of the transport sector. ?? During our gathering in Stavanger, we received project news from all partners and had fruitful discussions about the exciting road ahead.??? A critical milestone for us is the fast-approaching MW scale test of the solution at our test center, the #EnergyHouse. ?? Forth just shared that the "Plugging in Oregon" program has funded 57 charging projects so far this year, prioritizing rural locations and vulnerable communities.   • More than 200 gigawatts of capacity are expected to come online from Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) in the US by 2027, according to Wood Mackenzie. The numbers are impressive enough, but it's in the individual projects where we find entrepreneurs with creative solutions to the country's energy challenges. Here are three from a recent Energy Changemakers list that we're excited to see develop this year: ?? In Michigan, apartment complex SouthTown The residences in Ann Arbor will operate completely off-grid, with a wide variety of energy sources on-site, including geothermal and solar, as well as batteries to provide storage capacity and power #EVcharging. ??Boston Medical Center's "Clean Power Prescription" aims to reduce the financial burden of medical care for patients by passing on cost savings from solar virtual net metering. ? Lumin is bringing things back to the electrical panel with a smart solution to manage energy demand across the home.   • The electrification of medium- and heavy-duty transportation is starting to move in from the coasts of North America, as fleet operators begin to focus on primary routes from ports to inland distribution centers. As electric trucks move beyond localized fleet operations, existing challenges are amplified.     Renewable power generation and storage have a critical role to play in U.S. energy independence. As the industry starts to build a domestic manufacturing base, it will be essential to give the companies adding new jobs and facilities across the country room to grow. “On a?substantive level, everybody agrees that we should manufacture the critical energy technologies in the United States, full stop,”?says Solar Energy Manufacturers for America (SEMA) Coalition executive director Mike Carr in this interview with Canary Media Inc.   • From Elywhere's inception, we have used lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry for our energy storage systems. There's a lot to like about LFP in general - as EV owners charging their LFP packs to 100% will testify! - but the chemistry comes into its own for BESS applications. Here are some reasons why... ?? Predictable Economics in Unpredictable Markets: Price fluctuations for minerals used in other chemistries, such as nickel or cobalt, are influenced by volatile supply chains. Since 2020, variations in excess of 400% have been noted for some minerals. By contrast, LFP systems have relatively stable pricing, minimizing unexpected expenses when planning large future deployments or looking to scale an existing system. ?? Operational Savings from Thermal Stability: Thermal runaway incidents are extremely unlikely to occur compared to other storage technologies. The economic side benefits of LFP's exceptional safety record are often overlooked, such as reduced power consumption for HVAC and, often, lower insurance premiums for LFP storage systems. ?? High Cycle Life of Modern LFP Cells - Degradation is increasingly an afterthought for LFP-based BESS. In fact, these batteries may outlast the power electronics and control systems they're paired with, driving the industry toward more modular designs where other components can be replaced without interacting with the battery packs. As rising power demand enters mainstream conversation due to the proliferation of electric vehicles and AI, the value of #BESS will naturally follow. As this happens, the many benefits of LFP will also be more widely discussed.   • Electrifying rideshare remains a major hurdle for EV adoption in cities across the US and Canada. All too often, electric cabs are left to the mercy of the early charging infrastructure, which is already stretched in many metro areas. In Norway, where electric vehicles have quickly become the norm, deploying dedicated fast charging stations for taxis is part of the solution. Well-known brands like Oslo Taxi have transitioned to EVs and needed additional infrastructure to keep their fleet charged and making money. Elywhere provided a rapid example of that in 2024, delivering an ES-series to Oslo Taxi within one week of the order being placed. Despite North America moving at a slower path to new transportation technology than other parts of the world, we're on the same trajectory.   • 25 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity and a further 3.7 GW of wind generation came online in the first 11 months of 2024, contributing to lower electricity prices and a more stable grid. As battery prices continue to fall and the safety of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) storage comes to the forefront, expect to see energy storage systems increasingly augment this trend towards renewables this year.     Freight moves across the Atlantic are going electric. There's no reason North America cannot do the same... Four years ago, DFDS placed one of the largest electric truck orders at the time in Europe. 100 FM Electric Volvo Trucks to be deployed across the company's continental freight network over the following 18-24 months. Fast forward three years and this electric fleet is serving DFDS customers across Europe, taking the opportunity to fast charge when driver needs or regulatory limitations require it. This capture of our Elywhere ES Series #HDEV chargers in Germany shares one such session ? ?? With repeat business an indicator of success, Volvo secured another order from DFDS for 100 more #electrictrucks last year. The company reports that its growing electric truck fleet has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 1,516 tonnes (Well-to-Wheel) in 2023 and puts DFDS well on the way to electrifying one-quarter of its fleet in the next five years. As with passenger vehicle electrification, we're confident the United States and Canada can rise to meet the opportunities presented by electrifying heavy-duty freight moves from North American ports to inland destinations.
