When it comes to transformers, you need to be very careful not to buy a unit based solely on the lowest possible price. Cheap transforms may save you a few thousand dollars up front, but replacing these expensive units more often will end up costing you more. Here are the three main reasons that cause cheap transformers to fail: Poor craftsmanship: Transformers that are made by assembly machines often end up with weaknesses that get missed and lead to issues, including equipment failure. Low-quality materials: The quality of materials used in a transformer is paramount. Transformers often are priced less when they skimp on insulation or over materials. Inferior design: How the coils are wound around a transformer’s core has a major effect on a transformer’s durability. Round-wound is the best. Made in the USA. Sold in the USA. 关于我们
The Electric Service Company was founded in 1912 when two former Westinghouse engineers teamed up to launch the first transformer repair facility in the U.S. Since that time, ELSCO has engineered, repaired, built, and sold over half a million transformers. The longevity of our company has solidified our position as the go-to source for commercial and industrial clients seeking a reliable way to maintain substantial power needs. We are one of the few power transformer providers that designs and manufactures high quality copper-wound dry-type transformers. Whether it’s a hospital, higher education campus, utility company, or manufacturing facility, ELSCO serves commercial customers across North America. One thing all of our customers have in common: peace of mind that they’re going to receive uninterrupted power.

Everyone likes to talk about benefits. So, what are the benefits of selecting an ELSCO Dry Type transformer? First and foremost, it’s about QUALITY! Which is evident in our design, materials, and craftsmanship. Our units are hand-wound, with a disc-wound round coil, slotted comb, sheet wound secondary and a step-lap mitered core with low flux density. Insulated magnet wire is rated at 200°C and solid insulation is SG 200 fiberglass. Each unit is inspected and tested five times in the manufacturing process and again prior to shipping. This uncompromising commitment to quality produces real and tangible benefits for the end user and we stand behind our units with an industry-best 5-year warranty on our new medium voltage dry-type transformers for indoor use in a clean and dry environment. 5 questions you can ask to determine if you are getting a quality transformer: 1) What type of insulation are you getting? 10 mil is way better than 5 mil thick Nomex insulation. 2) Does it have a sheet wound secondary (better for short circuit strength) or wire secondary (less expensive and not as good short circuit strength) 3) Does it have a standard 150-degree C rise or more insulation allowing it to operate at a cooler (preferred) temperature of 115 degrees C or 80 degrees C rise? 4) Does it have the standard 60 KV BIL (Basic Insulation Level) for 15 KV primary voltages or does it have a better high to ground clearance with a 95 KV BIL? 5) Does it stab up the primary and secondary bus or is the primary and secondary modified for “true” plug-and-play retrofits which allow for quick and seamless installations? When it comes to transformers, quality can be the difference between keeping your operations running and catastrophic downtime. Did you know transformers tend to fail more often in the late spring and early summer? As A/C units, or chillers, start back up for the first time in months, it increases the load on your transformer. More load equals more stress. For older or “weaker” transformers, the added stress can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Here is a quick tip: Regardless of the age or condition of your transformer, it’s always a good idea to do any preventative maintenance prior to increases in load. Also, be sure you have a backup plan in case your unit suddenly goes out. It is good to know who has your size units in stock for quick shipping. To get you back up and running even faster we perform custom bus work on every transformer we sell for a plug-and-play transition. Installing a new transformer must be carefully planned and engineered with attention to detail. The new transformer must fit into an enclosure with proper safety clearances; mechanical and electrical connections have to be perfectly aligned, and instrumentation and accessories have to be properly installed. With the cost of rigging and installation often as high as the transformer itself, any mistakes at this point can be costly. That is why our transformers leave the warehouse with the connections aligned with your setup and the dimensions double checked to ensure a perfect fit. Avista Corp.'s Kettle Falls Generating Station in northeastern Washington converts biomass into electricity and is one of the greenest in the country. However, after a preventive maintenance outage, they realized that the insulation of four transformers, each of them 35 years old, had already deteriorated to a concerning degree. Transformers working under these types of increased loads can cause catastrophic events like explosions, fires, or meltdowns. They called us because we design and build replacement transformers for older or outdated units, which often require a certain amount of customization to fit the space available. We tailored the new transformers to fit into the facility’s existing space and integrate directly with existing switchgear. They were back up and running in no time and lowered their operating costs with our transformers. What causes a dry-type transformer to overheat and does high heat affect a transformer’s lifespan? First, constant exposure to heat – above a transformer’s limit – will significantly decrease its service life. The average temperature increase of a transformer over the ambient air temperature when fully loaded is referred to as the C-rise. The lower the C-rise, the better a transformer’s performance efficiency, and longevity. Several factors that can cause a transformer to overheat or increase its C-rise: For example: -Improper load rating selection: Selecting a transformer with a rating that can handle the intended application is crucial. The load rating is the maximum power a unit can efficiently and safely handle without causing damage or overheating. -Inadequate airflow: Installing a dry-type unit in a location with sufficient airflow and ventilation is vital. Even if a transformer is in an enclosure with air vents, it should not be near anything obstructing the airflow. -Poor Insulation: Various insulation types transfer or dissipate heat at different rates. ELSCO uses DuPont Nomex Type 410 insulation because it offers effective protection against temperature failure. -Low-quality windings: Prolonged temperatures exceeding the design temperature can break down the windings’ dielectric strength, leading to power surges, hot spots, or total system failure. Different winding methods can also help improve a transformer’s C-rise. Our transformers are built to last, and we stand behind them with an industry-best 5-year warranty on our medium-voltage dry-type transformers for indoor use in a clean and dry environment. When it comes to big-ticket items, power transformers come near the top of the list along with switchgear, breakers, and rigging. So, when a transformer fails prematurely, it is a painful experience with damages that can far exceed the cost of a replacement unit. These added expenses may include the loss of priceless production time, damaged credibility, or regulatory fines and civil lawsuits. So, when it comes to buying a new transformer, you want cost effective, not cheap. Cheaper transformers will often cost you more in the long run. Especially if the transformer is critical to your business process or data center, then the extra $10,000 or $20,000 for a better unit represents inexpensive insurance. One of the most influential factors in transformer longevity is the level of craftsmanship, the attention to detail in the manufacturing process and the quality control. We stand behind our craftsmanship with an industry-best 5-year warranty on our medium voltage dry-type transformers for indoor use in a clean and dry environment. Not only will a high-quality transformer last longer, run quieter and operate more efficiently, but the cost of not having to buy and install a transformer often eliminates the lower upfront cost of a cheap transformer. It is not uncommon for the cost of an installation to exceed the purchase price of the transformer. When you add in the rigging, acceptance testing and installation expenses, it all adds up. We often see our transformers exceeding 30 years of operation… What does quality mean to you?
