Recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows 87,000 drug overdose deaths from October 2023 to September 2024—a decrease from the previous year. Despite the decrease in overdose deaths, Black New Yorkers are dying at 5x the rate of their White counterparts. While progress is happening, 87,000 lives lost is still too many.? Yesterday, the New York State Black Legislative Task Force, in partnership with Elmcor, hosted fellow Black-led community-based organizations across the region in Albany for Non-Profit Advocacy Day—a day to advocate for critical funding that supports the vital services we provide in our communities. From youth development to substance use treatment and older adult support, our work depends on investments that uplift and empower the communities we serve.
