?? 3 personal takeaways from OpenAI DevDay in SF 1?? __prompt_caching__ - Prompt Caching is ridiculously nice. While the 50% price discount for cached tokens is not as significant as Anthropic's 90%, it happens automatically! I'd expect extra control to come over time, but this is a really good developer experience. - Our daily bill at Ellipsis (YC W24) literally dropped ~30% overnight without doing anything at all. 2?? __o1__ - People from OpenAI are *very* excited about o1, comparing it to GPT-2 in terms of where performance is heading. - Sadly, support for function/tool calling has no clear date, though likely by end of year. - Most engineers I talked to were somewhat disappointed in o1-preview, with speculation that it's a somewhat early checkpoint and still has quite a bit of training left - However, quite a few people were fans of o1-mini, especially for coding. 3?? __real_time_api__ - Real-time voice API looks incredible. In the same way it feels like every website/app now has a chatbot because it's so easy to build, in ~6 months it seems likely that you'll be able to literally speak to your computer for most tasks. (Whether that is desirable is TBD)
