Ellie Mental Health Glen Allen, RVA is now offering Support for Parents of Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), a scientifically proven program developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz. SPACE is evidence-based effective model of supporting parents whose children have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. This program does not require participation of the child, only caregivers will be expected to be present in sessions. Parents will learn how to alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s symptoms - importantly, parents are not required to impose changes on their children’s behavior. Instead, parents are shown how to replace their own accommodating behaviors (which allow anxiety to flourish) with supportive responses that demonstrate both acceptance of children’s challenges and confidence in their ability to function, cope and grow. Together with the therapist, caregivers will develop specific and customized plans that will allow them to gradually introduce effective changes in their own behavior and as a result to create a healthy environment in their household. Parents will learn how to: - Tell the difference between anxiety-based behaviors and developmentally appropriate behaviors - Talk with an anxious child - Avoid common pitfalls to identifying the ways in which parents have been enabling their child’s anxious behavior - Receive nonjudgmental support and guidance throughout the course of the program #elliementalhealth
