Money equals power in our world. Increasing your financial power and nudging the world in a better direction are not mutually exclusive. You can, in fact, grow your wealth while “voting” for companies and causes that make the kind of impact that you want to see shape the world. The technical term for this is “values-driven personal finance.” But you can always say “using your financial power for good.”? ? With some investors now worried about a possible recession and the stock market facing heightened uncertainty, it’s a good time to recognize what we can and cannot control. We can control our own behavior, make thoughtful financial plans, and adjust our plan as needed. However, we don't control the economic cycle, market movements, or policy decisions that impact the broader financial landscape. Recognizing this distinction can allow us to focus on the parts of our financial lives that we can control.? ? The Ellevest team hosts a live conversation each month where we discuss what's going on in the markets and answer your most pressing questions. Our next webinar is happening tomorrow (Tuesday, March 18) at 3 PM ET / 12 PM PT, save your spot here: https://lnkd.in/dMvS5U_X

In 2024, women entrepreneurs started tens of thousands of new businesses on Yelp. The industry that stood out ... home services, beating out every category for total women-owned business openings (more than 15,000) for the second consecutive year. Additionally, as homeowners and renters opt to invest in improvements, rather than enter an unpredictable housing market, women-owned construction-related businesses experienced strong growth. As these new businesses open across the country at rapid rates, women’s contributions are not only driving social shifts — they’re paving the way for meaningful economic growth in the communities they serve. Acknowledging the emotional aspect of investing doesn't mean surrendering to it or ignoring it altogether. Rather, it means developing awareness and building sound habits that help minimize mistakes and increase your chances of positive financial outcomes. Moving forward, keeping that perspective will be crucial. The barrage of news driving today's markets won't disappear tomorrow. So filtering out the noise will be important in navigating the investment landscape ahead. Successful long-term investing isn't about eliminating emotions — it's about recognizing them, contextualizing them, and incorporating that awareness into your decision-making process. This #InternationalWomensDay, we’re celebrating the phenomenal women on our team and in our community who push our work forward. Our Women’s Rights Pillar aims to consider the myriad ways company behaviors can impact women. This involves a holistic approach to framing how women’s issues are reflected in our portfolios. Amanda Baker partnered with Ellevest’s Emily Green for a “15 Minutes With” interview on the intersection between climate change and women’s rights — and why investors should take note. Check it out.? https://lnkd.in/gU7DetvS #womensrights #climatechange #wealthmanagement #valuesalignedinvesting

“As more women in the US build sizable amounts of wealth through careers, entrepreneurship and inheritances, they’ve become one of the fastest-growing groups seeking financial advisors and planning services. There are several drivers behind women gaining more wealth over time, such as the great wealth transfer – the movement of an estimated $84 trillion over the next 20 years from Silent and Baby Boomer generations to younger people globally. More women have been building wealth prior to marriage through careers and entrepreneurship. Recent data from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board) also found that more than two-thirds of women serve as the primary decision-makers for investments in their households. Now wealth management firms are looking to position themselves to attract and be representative of a growing client base of women, largely through aligning their services to meet women’s unique needs and hiring more women into client-facing finance roles. ‘The industry overall is very skewed to the older white men today,’ said Emily Green, head of wealth management at Ellevest, a financial company with an all-women team of financial advisors and planners. ‘There’s actually a big problem in how they’re going to serve women, but I think it’s an amazing opportunity to think about how advisory firms can shift to hiring younger women in order to be advisors. I think they’re going to be thoughtful about that.’”

“Don't be emotional with your money.” It’s common financial wisdom that most agree with — including investing legend Warren Buffett who famously advised, “Be an emotional person, just not with your money.” But here’s the thing — money isn’t just money; it’s wrapped in layers of personal history, family dynamics, and life experiences. How you grew up with (or without) it, how it was discussed in your home, how you earned or inherited it — all shape your relationship with your finances. Add to that common behavioral biases, such as loss aversion where we tend to feel losses much more than gains, and it’s easy to see how the current environment can make financial decisions tougher than usual.
