Construction of the University of Rhode Island's Ocean Robotics Lab is underway, with the freshwater testing tank as the first component—its concrete shell (30’ long, 20’ wide and 15’ deep) has just been poured.?The testing tank will be located within a high bay staging area in the new, 30,000-square-foot building that will serve as an innovation and collaboration hub for ocean exploration and research. ?Once completed, the lab will be used for testing underwater robotic devices prior to their deployment on URI’s new research vessel, Narragansett Dawn. While the ocean covers nearly 70% of Earth’s surface, only 26% of the seafloor has been explored. ?We’re excited to see the new discoveries and research that will emerge from the latest advances in robotic technology, with URI’s new lab leading the way! #ellenzweig #architecture #architecturedesign #robotics #oceanography

We just released the AIA 2030 By the Numbers (RY23) report! The Report highlights increases in both net-zero energy projects and projects with renewable energy; major improvements in embodied carbon reporting; and two new firm case studies, showing that firm culture is key to improving design outcomes. The 2023 data shows: - 430 predicted net zero projects, a 24% increase from last year - 490 firms reporting over 24,000 projects, totaling 3.9 billion square feet - 154 firms reporting 7,000 projects with embodied carbon data I am proud to serve on the AIA 2030 Commitment Working Group. If you have any questions about the 2030 By the Numbers report, the 2030 commitment itself, or our working group, just ask.?-Jacob https://lnkd.in/eNx_JDBj

We’re thrilled to announce that three exceptionally talented students from the Boston Architectural College, under the guidance of Ellenzweig’s Associate Principal Jacob Werner and Tyler Hinckley, won the 2024 AIA COTE Top Ten for Students competition! A huge congratulations to Betty Chen, Rohith Reddy Dumpala, and Lexi Winston for their outstanding project: "Fire Station Park: An Elevated Experience." Their design stood out among more than 1,400 submissions from 85 schools. We’re incredibly proud of these future design leaders and can’t wait to see their continued success in the field. Congratulations to Betty, Rohith, and Lexi!
Congratulations to BAC students Betty Chen, Rohith Reddy Dumpala & Alexis Winston, along with faculty members Tyler Hinckley & Jacob Werner, for winning The American Institute of Architects (AIA) COTE’s Top Ten for Students Competition in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA)! Their innovative design,?Fire Station Park: An Elevated Experience,?has been recognized as one of the top 10 projects that address the pressing impacts of climate change. These award-winning designs highlight the importance of achieving net-zero emissions, adapting to resilient climate strategies, and promoting social and environmental equity. We are incredibly proud of our talented community for imagining a healthier, sustainable, and equitable future! https://lnkd.in/gnMqp-6e

When Yale University decided to relocate its neuroscience and psychology disciplines into new facilities at 100 College Street, the University enlisted Ellenzweig to help unify various departments that had been scattered across its campus into a single, cohesive environment conducive to interdisciplinary collaboration. Our mission was to enhance both physical and intellectual connections. The result was the renovation of over 140,000 square feet of existing office space into cutting-edge research labs, offices, and collaboration spaces. In partnership with Vanderweil Engineers, we designed interconnected labs that are efficient, flexible, and adhere to the highest sustainability standards. The building now accommodates departments from the School of Medicine along with the Wu Tsai Institute, a University initiative established in 2021 to further research into human cognition. With the recent dedication of 100 College Street, Yale has further strengthened its position as a leader in the bioscience sector. Inspiring work by these Boston Architectural College students who just completed their Architecture 4 studio projects that focused on how architects can be part of the climate crisis solution! Congratulations to the students and Ellenzweig's Jacob Werner who taught the design studio.
Design Studio Final Review. Congratulations to our students on completing Architecture 4 studio! Students worked in 3 teams of 3 to design a new (or transformed) Fire Station and Emergency Response Center for South Boston. Fantastic projects on different themes: 1. "Evolutionary Reuse: A Dynamic Fire House Legacy" explored ways to adapt the existing fire house, adding a community center and garden. Students: Juanita Libreros Foronda, AIAS, NOMAS , Tram Nguyen, Devangi Patel 2. “Decompressing the Fire Station” explored a multi-story fire station organized around a central courtyard / wellness retreat. Students: Heraclio Rubio-Guerrero, Maahi Vyas, Esra Gode 3. "Fire Station Park: An Elevated Experience" explored a single story fire station with a green roof park. Students: Betty Chen , Lexi Winston , Rohith Reddy Dumpala Studio Brief: This studio explores how architects can be part of the solution to the climate crisis. Students design to a Net Zero Carbon (NZC) goal, with net positive energy and low embodied carbon concepts. Rather than doing less harm, we strive for an architecture that does more good for the communities in which we build. More great tools from I2SL: International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories to help manage and achieve your lab building's energy goals.
A new feature in the Laboratory Benchmarking Tool (LBT), Energy Score Target Setter, allows lab owners, operators, and consultants to select a target Energy Score value and determine what their corresponding energy use intensity (EUI) levels would need to be to achieve it. You can even adjust individual fuel amounts to reflect decarbonization strategies and receive a target EUI by fuel type for use in procurement or design. To set your target, visit https://lbt.i2sl.org/.
