On September 25, 2024, I made the decision to no longer keep my caregiving journey, caring for my combat veteran husband private and testified in front of the House Committee of Veterans Affairs, alongside Steven Schwab, Elizabeth Dole Foundation CEO, Jonathan Pruden, Wounded Warrior Projects Special Advisor to the Chief of Staff for Warrior Care & Rajeev Ramchand, Senior Behavioral Scientist at RAND, to advocate on behalf of America’s hidden heroes. The Congressional hearing, Everyday Heroes: Supporting the Veteran Caregiver Community, comes on the heels of a historic, newly released RAND Corporation report, which estimates that the number of Americans providing care to a wounded, ill, or injured service member or veteran now stands at 14.3 million. I am incredibly honored & pray that my voice represented my fellow caregivers well. While I shared a slight glimpse into my circumstances publicly, all caregivers live daily with similar experiences. During my testimony I asked for the immediate passage of The Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare & Improvement Act, as this will positively impact the veteran & caregiver community. On Monday 11/18, at 6:30pm EST this bill will be voted on. I ask that you please call or email your state leaders, to express your desire for them to vote in approval of the Act.?Caregivers deserve better. Veterans deserve better. Elizabeth Dole Foundation CEO Steve Schwab released the following statement after an agreement was reached on the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act: "The Elizabeth Dole Foundation has been working with a dedicated coalition of partners for more than a year to pass this transformative legislation for the millions of veterans, caregivers, survivors, and families we serve. Today a bipartisan agreement was reached ahead of the vote in the House of Representatives on Monday evening. This is a major milestone in our efforts toward passage and we want to thank House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Mike Bost for his passion and persistent leadership and Ranking Member Mark Takano for reaching an agreement today to support the bill on the floor next week. We expect to see significant bipartisan support on Monday in the House and will push for swift passage in the Senate to follow so that we can get this to the President’s desk to sign. Our veterans, caregivers, and survivors are depending on us to get this over the finish line!"
