The hardest aspect of AI hospital at home systems is gathering the data accurately. In an inpatient setting, a trained professional will be operating the device. In the home, this is often an untrained relative or the patient themselves. Early RPM devices, which depended on user-input data, often suffered from usability issues, prompting unreliable data and false positives that made medical professionals wary of trusting what was coming in.? ? Almost 100,000 nurses retired during the pandemic, leaving hospitals battling a constant staffing problem. The exodus created a care gap, stretching those that stayed across more and more patients. To address this challenge, hospitals have gotten more innovative around tooling dedicated to empowering nurses and extending their impacts, such as AI-enabled virtual nursing. Concurrently, we're seeing reports like the one out last week from McKinsey & Company, finding that 64% of nurses support the use of more AI tools with the greatest concerns being trust in accuracy and lack of human interaction. In September 2024 we tracked 67 healthcare IT news stories, with AI clinician assistant, data & analytics, and clinical operations news showing up most frequently. Here's a quick recap of the month's top stories you may have missed: 1. Medical language models It didn’t seem like the large language model (LLM) or medical language model (MLM) markets could get much hotter, but we definitely saw an uptick in stories here across fundraising announcements, product updates, and general (and sometimes juicy) news. 2. Medical imaging is getting the AI CDS treatment AI solutions around medical imaging aren’t new, but we did see more major vendor updates this month than we have in the past, particularly in the clinical decision support space. 3. Hospitals & vendors are pursuing solutions for nursing workflows According to a nursing shortage report from the AACN, “52% of nurses are considering leaving their current position due primarily to insufficient staffing, work negatively affecting health and well-being, and inability to deliver quality care. In addition, 60% of acute care nurses report feeling burnt out, and 75% report feeling stressed, frustrated, and exhausted.” Solving nursing workflows is a major priority for many of the execs we speak to, and we’re starting to see that reflected more and more in product updates and adoptions. 4. Epic gets taken to court Particle made news this month when it filed its antitrust lawsuit against Epic, alleging anticompetitive behavior in the payer platform category. 5.
