At the recent 2024 AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) Annual Symposium (#AMIA2024), researchers from Elimu Informatics, in collaboration with Waddah Arafat MD, Bret Heale, PhD, and Srikar Chamala PhD, presented their work: "Molecularly-Guided Cancer Clinical Trial Matching using FHIR and HL7 Clinical Quality Language: A Proof of Concept." This research explored the feasibility of using the FHIR Genomics model and Clinical Quality Language (CQL) to address challenges in automating clinical trial matching for molecular eligibility criteria. The prototype demonstrated that even complex molecular criteria can be encoded using FHIR and CQL, paving the way for scalable, efficient clinical trial matching in precision medicine.? The goal of this work is to complement and enhance the efforts of the GenomeX and CodeX HL7 FHIR Accelerator communities, advancing clinical trial matching to better connect patients to precision cancer care opportunities.? This panel titled, "Leveraging Large Language Models and Other Artificial Intelligence Methods to Advance Patient-Centered Clinical Decision?Support" moderated by Prashila Dullabh, MD, FAMIA, IAHSI is discussing innovative findings from AHRQ’s Clinical Decision Support Innovation Collaborative (#CDSiC), including the opportunity for utilizing artificial intelligence, including large language models (LLMs), to aid patient-centered clinical decision making. I was very proud to present as first author the enormous amount of work that went into this poster at AMIA. This project, with more to be presented and published later, has spanned a few years and involved impressive collaboration from a huge number of contributors. I did a lot for the logic and design (including writing the CQL and FHIR artifacts) for successful deployment of a cloud-hosted clinical decision support system, implemented simultaneously at Yale and MGB. I am so grateful to the CDC, the Public Health Informatics Institute, and our clinical partners for their commitment to such a compelling and challenging project. Love my job at Elimu Informatics!
