Measles Alert: Stay Protected ?? The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the first case of measles in LA County this year, highlighting the importance of vaccination across California, including in Sacramento. LINK: https://lnkd.in/gZGrAKu8 Measles is one of the most contagious viruses, spreading through the air when an infected person breathes, talks, coughs, or sneezes. It can linger in the air for hours, putting unvaccinated individuals at serious risk. Vaccination is the Best Protection ?? The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) is safe, effective, and provides 97% protection with two doses. Unvaccinated individuals have a 90% risk of contracting measles if exposed. Complications can be severe, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. Who Should Get Vaccinated ?? ?? Young children should get two doses of MMR vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 to 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 to 6 years of age. Children can receive the second dose earlier than 4 years of age if at least 28 days have passed since the first dose. ?? Infants at least 6 months old who are traveling internationally should receive one dose before their 1st birthday and at least two weeks before departing for international travel. ?? All older children (K–12), college-age students and adults who are not up to date on their MMR vaccine. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection ?? Cologuard is a non-invasive test designed for colorectal cancer screening in adults aged 45 and older who are at average risk. It analyzes a stool sample for specific DNA markers and hidden blood that may indicate the presence of cancer or precancerous polyps. The test can be completed at home without special bowel preparation or dietary changes. To take the test, you need a prescription from your primary care provider. Once you receive the sample collection kit, follow the included instructions and send your sample to the laboratory for analysis. The test results will be sent to your doctor, who will discuss them with you and, if necessary, recommend further testing. It is important to note that a positive Cologuard result does not mean you have cancer, but it does require further examination, usually a colonoscopy, to confirm or rule out the diagnosis. Likewise, a negative result does not guarantee the absence of disease; regular screening tests should continue as recommended by your doctor. Discuss with your primary care provider whether Cologuard is suitable for you, considering your medical history and individual risk factors.
