Today was one of my favorite days of the year—Friendsgiving at Vaughn Occupational High School! From the food to the décor, every element was created by their students. Some of our longest-standing associates at Eli's Cheesecake Company are graduates of Vaughn, a Chicago Public School that provides specialized education for students with cognitive, developmental, and multiple disabilities. Three years ago, my dad, Marc Schulman, met with Vaughn Principal Stephanie Anderson and Assistant Principal Tracy Jesse, and an idea was born: Project Wright Access, an internship program designed to create job opportunities for their students. The program provides on-the-job training and food handler certification, with the goal of leading to employment. It was funded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity through a JTED Grant in partnership with Wright College, Vaughn, and the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences. Walking into Vaughn today, I was greeted with the warmest welcome from Joshua and David—Vaughn graduates and now proud Eli's Associates who joined us through Project Wright Access. This is the best part of my job, and I feel so lucky to work with and learn from them. PWA recently received additional funding, which means many more years of opportunities for some of the most deserving and hardworking people I know.
