Tredway and ELH Mgmt. LLC have teamed up to acquire and preserve seven HUD-restricted buildings in Fort Greene— a move that will maintain 193 homes are deeply affordable housing for another 40 years at 50% AMI, with an additional 30% of the homes reserved for formerly homeless individuals and families.? Our focus with this preservation is to protect homes for longtime residents of this developing neighborhood while investing upwards of $10 million in critical aging-in-place retrofits, apartment upgrades and energy-efficiency improvements. Through a partnership with The Jericho Project, residents will have access to a new wellness center, on-site nurse and social services that emphasize housing retention and age-appropriate programming. Socio-economic diversity is the cornerstone that makes New York City great and we are delighted to preserve and improve homes for our city's seniors and those who are getting back on their feet. It was an incredible experience to meet Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor at the naming ceremony for Casa Celina, a brand new affordable senior building that ELH is co-developing in the Bronx. The project is named after Justice Sotomayor's mother, Celina, who raised her children in public housing after the death of her husband— a factory worker with a third-grade education. She bought the only set of encyclopedias in the neighborhood and held down two jobs so that her daughter could ultimately become a lawyer, and her son, Juan, a doctor. Justice Sotomayor's story is the story of affordable housing. A home is the first step in helping families climb the economic ladder and provide a better future for their children. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor joined us for a naming ceremony and tour of Casa Celina, a brand new 204 unit affordable senior housing building in the Bronx, named after her mother, Celina Báez. “The fact that there are so many of our family and friends here today is not just a testament to the many lives my mom touched, but also the importance of a strong community that can develop in a stable environment – and that’s what this new home Casa Celina will do for so many people, many who have not had that stability before.
