Creating a community starts with a goal of bringing people together. Yesterday was our 11th meeting of the Stokes to Surry Business Connections group in my hometown / rural county in NC, and our great friends & supporters from Crisanthemum Ceramics in Mount Airy, NC sponsored a fun activity for our networking community as a way to educate about their business while giving back in a way that was meaningful to the group. Everyone had an opportunity to paint a dip bowl that will go into their kiln, and we're excited to see how they turn out! It isn't always about solving big problems - although that's a big part of why we exist (to help each other). Sometimes just spending time together with your community in a different way is helpful to your creative energy. Thankful for the opportunity to engage with these folks as we've worked through business issues for nearly everyone in the group since we started this in January. Everything doesn't have to be big numbers to be impactful. Impacts come from the relationships you're building. P.S. The potter from this business quit a big corporate job a little over a year ago to pursue her hobby of pottery full-time and now has a thriving business. Bold moves lead to good stuff. ????????

Who is uncomfortable networking and needs a guide to help you make progress in this area? Check out the information in the comments to consider the eBook JUST released that includes 40 pages to guide you through the process - and build your confidence while doing it. It's also set up as a "pay what you can" product. Interested in feedback for anyone who downloads the eBook! (also includes some worksheets that will be immediately available for download along with the 40-page workbook) This is an attempt to support folks in a new way after feedback from hundreds of conversations over the past year. Enjoy!

What does ELEVEN-B mean? Glad you asked ?? We are a company driven by heart-based leadership led by someone who chose people over profits. We are focused on helping people, teams, and organizations to identify the areas that are holding them back. We are motivated by seeing the impact of poor leadership and the associated "people damage" this creates. We are serious about building up people in order to impact their organizations and their overall lives.

Empathy - such a superpower. Empathy has been a popular topic in the business recently and thought we would share a slide from a recent presentation that highlights 3 very simple things YOU can do today to be more empathetic to others. To be clear, empathy doesn't mean you agree with people - but it DOES mean you will: (1) Listen without feeling compelled to respond with a solution; just - listen. Most of you listen to someone with the intent to respond - stop doing that. When you fully listen to someone else, you're not formulating a response while you listen. JUST LISTEN. (2) Give people space to actually talk. Asking questions that give you a "yes/no" response will limit their ability to feel heard. Try something like "how is the current environment impacting you right now?" vs. "are you doing okay?". You'll get a way different response. (3) Acknowledge how people are feeling. It doesn't mean you agree with their emotions, but you do need to acknowledge that their emotions are important; your opinions do NOT matter more than how someone else is feeling. Implement these 3 things today for impact that matters more than your individual opinions on any topic - work or personal. Have an extraordinary Friday everyone!

Oversharing at work can be dangerous, and many leaders will manipulate your feelings to get what they need. Always remember your job for any employer is a transaction for them and can be gone in a 3 minute discussion. Sharing is good. Oversharing is not.

??Employee Advocate ?? Counter to Human Resources ?? Commission Finder ?? Founder/CEO ?? Entrepreneur??♂? ??. I consult on severance, PIPs, employment matters and more.

WARNING - Never tell your employer you are unhappy. When things are not going well, when they are unhappy with you, that is the one question they ask, more than any other. Are you happy here? Do you want to be here? It is always an unusual question, that catches you off-guard, and one they have never asked before. Often out of context or done in a leading way. Let me tell you a little secret. They don’t care if you’re happy. They are checking to see if their campaign to make you unhappy is working. You know, the false PIP, the micromanagement, the moving the goal posts with comp plans and endless commission disputes, to name just a few. The toxic environment, the targeting, retaliation, isolation, gaslighting, favoritism, humiliation, and discrimination to name a few more. All intended to make you unhappy so that you will leave on your own. If they ask you if you are unhappy, it is like a PIP in many ways, done with deceptive purposes. They are telling you that they are unhappy. That you might want to start looking for a job right away. A PIP likely is not far behind if you are not already on one or if they bother with one at all. The reason they ask if you are unhappy is that you are an employee-at-will. Employers don’t want to, nor must they employ unhappy employees. When they terminate you, they will consider it a mutual separation. After all you are unhappy and therefore don’t want to work there. You will likely not get unemployment or perhaps severance. If you tell them, you are unhappy, you are asking them to terminate you. If asked, always tell them you love your job, teammates, and company. You want to work there forever and are excited about what the future holds. And of course, if you’re unhappy, find a new job. Just do it while you are still employed and have a salary. Do it on your terms.

Business Advisor, Confidence Builder & People Developer ?? Heart-Based Leader ?? ?? Former Logistics Exec - now I help people, teams, and business owners to move forward >>

Real relationships always sustain through changes. When I was a shipper with significant spend & international freight responsibility, I had people calling me constantly wanting to connect and understand how they could move my freight. Those were mostly transactional calls - those folks disappeared from my network the minute I shifted out of that market - because they were short game players who mostly wanted what they needed to win. If you don't think building your people network is important, change industries and watch what happens. The real relationships won't change. Those are the ones where you should be focused as you're building your own people network. Reach out to at least TWO new contacts this month just to better understand what they do and ask how YOU can be helpful to them. One-side relationship building will get you a lopsided outcome.
