I'm often asked about reinsurance and retro programs for finance departments, but that's not really my wheelhouse. But as is my firm belief, telling a customer "I don't know" is fully acceptable, as long as it's followed with a "don't worry, I can find out". I worked with Chad Staples over at Elevation Dealer Services to draft a blog article that does a better job of explaining how these programs work, and some of the benefits to the dealership (both financial and tax related). In summary: In today’s highly competitive Powersports industry, dealers are constantly searching for strategies to build long-term wealth while maintaining control over their profit centers. One often overlooked solution is reinsurance, a financial tool that allows dealers to retain more profits from F&I products such as Vehicle Service Contracts (VSCs), GAP, and tire and wheel protection. Unlike traditional methods that rely on overcharges or "packs," which are taxed as ordinary income, reinsurance creates an opportunity for compounded growth through reserves. By shifting to this model, dealers can significantly enhance their financial standing, especially when selling a high volume of VSCs and other F&I products. The wealth-building potential of reinsurance becomes even more compelling for multi-store dealerships. For instance, with just 50 VSCs per month, a dealer could accumulate nearly $300,000 annually in reserves. Over 10 years, with compounded investment returns, this amount could grow to nearly $500,000. For dealers with multiple locations, the financial impact multiplies, offering millions in reserves and long-term growth. By embracing reinsurance, Powersports dealers not only increase their wealth but also gain more control over their business strategy and profit centers.
