Although men are historically more likely to develop substance abuse disorders, women also suffer in large percentages nationally. The gap between female and male overdoses has been slowly decreasing over years. Statistics also show that due to women being more susceptible to chronic pain, doctors tend to prescribe women pain relievers that need to be used over a longer period of time than men.
