The 2025 theme for #WomensHistoryMonth is Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations. We are celebrating this month with a highlight of Blossom Lorraine Van Lowe who was the first African American teacher hired in the San Diego Unified School District. As an organization founded by teachers, it is our joy to celebrate the accomplishments of Mrs. Van Lowe. Born in California, she attended Memorial Junior High in Logan Heights as a child and was hired there as a teacher in 1942. She earned her BA degree from San Diego State College (which became San Diego State University in 1974) and her Masters at Columbia University. #BlossomLorraineVanLowe #AmericanHistory

关于我们
The Elementary Institute of Science (EIS) is an afterschool science enrichment center dedicated to igniting the young minds of San Diego County and addressing the widening gap of underrepresented students in science. With laboratory experiences at the heart of its programs, EIS provides maximum exposure to all scientific fields in an interactive, inquiry-based environment that hones students’ analytical and critical thinking skills naturally. Through carefully constructed lesson plans and its signature hands-on, problem-solving activities, EIS challenges children to master a wide array of specialized, complex STEM-based courses. EIS continually seeks new ways to create an inspired, engaged community of motivated students who understand science theory and practical applications. EIS was started in 1964 as an after school club held in the back of an elementary school classroom in Southeast San Diego. EIS became an after-school and weekend science enrichment program for children ages 7-13. The program grew and partnered with other local schools, universities, and businesses to provide instructors and equipment. In 2003 EIS opened the door to its current two story 15,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that now stands out as a beacon of education and the ideal environment for children to learn about science and technology. The facility is equipped with five science labs, two computer science labs, a photography lab, lecture theatre, and conference room.

Congratulations! Your hard work has paid off and this is well deserved. Thank you for being part of our education team. Your engaging instruction (and endless patience) ensures students are having fun learning about STEM.
I am thrilled to announce my recent graduation from the University of San Diego, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences with a minor in Environmental and Ocean Sciences! During my time at USD, I had the honor of being recognized on the Dean’s First Honors List three times and the Second Honors List once. One of the most transformative experiences during my time at USD was studying abroad for a semester in Prague, Czech Republic, at Anglo-American University. This marked my first time traveling outside the United States and provided the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in new cultures, meet amazing people and professors, and deepen my understanding of global perspectives. Studying abroad not only expanded my knowledge of humanities and culture but also allowed me to connect with my ancestral Eastern European roots—an experience I will always cherish. Additionally, I am proud to have completed my senior capstone presentation, which showcased the research I conducted in partnership with Wildlands Studies during the summer of 2023 in Miloli‘i, Hawaii. My work culminated in both a research poster and a 20-minute presentation delivered to peers and professors at USD. Through this project, I was able to advance my skills in field research, community outreach, scientific writing, and public speaking. With my degree, I aspire to advocate for a more sustainable and compassionate world that prioritizes justice for all living organisms. Education is a privilege I value very deeply, and I am incredibly grateful for everything USD has given me—lifelong friendships, invaluable connections with professors, personal growth, and a broadened perspective of the world around me. Currently, I am excited to be working as a part-time STEM instructor at the Elementary Institute of Science. In this role, I aim to share my love of science, inspire young learners, and apply the knowledge and passion I’ve gained throughout my time at USD to cultivate curiosity and enthusiasm in the next generation of scientists.

Thank you Yanet! A truly wonderful cohort for this grant. We are looking forward to connecting with our community and uncovering more about STEM in southeast and the impact of our own programs on community members since our humble beginnings 60 years ago.
It's not official until its LinkedIn official.... Eeek, is that a nod to old school Facebook days? We are funded! Excited to announce that Fleet Science Center, WorldBeat Center, Project New Village, Elementary Institute of Science, NERDS RULE INC. and @Valencia Park/Malcolm X Branch of the San Diego Public Library, have been funded by the National Science Foundation with a $3.7 million dollar award to launch the "STEM in Your Neighborhood" (SiYN), a four-year initiative focused on local stories of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Even before the funding announcement came in, I am proud of all the orgs and individuals who comprise the Leadership Collaborative, who came together to ideate and dream of what racial equity and narrative change could mean for the communities of Southeastern San Diego. For over two years, we ideated, designed, wrote, struggled with portals/paperwork/deadlines, welcomed new partners and research lenses. The STEM in Your Neighborhood (SiYN) initiative will engage residents from the Neighborhoods of Southeastern San Diego (NSSD), to bring forward stories of the communities’ rich history of and continued participation in science, technology, engineering, and math. Through storytelling, participatory research, and innovative approaches, the Leadership Collaborative will work with community members as they redefine their community’s STEM narrative for the future.??? ? Community impact research components of the project will be led by the University of San Diego, The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education, participatory action research by Cynthia Kurtz, and project evaluation by Drs. Karyl Askew and Monifa Beverly, PhD. The project will include leadership and direction from Makeda Dread Cheatom (Executive Director, WorldBeat Center), N. Diane Moss(Executive Director, Project New Village), Mwenda KudumuBiggs, PhD and myself serving as co-principal investigators. Here's to 2025! You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/gDgxmTZd
