Did you know the labels and decals for our Cranio Pro-IO devices are created using a mix of cutting-edge and time-tested methods? ? At our printing partner Sun Industries Pty Ltd, their 2024 Canon Arizona printer produces incredibly detailed, photographic-quality prints. These are then enhanced with traditional screen printing, where solvent-based inks chemically bond to the material for unmatched durability and vibrant colours. ? Ayrton recently visited Gavin at Sun Industries to see this seamless blend of technology and craftsmanship in action. It’s experiences like this that have us excited about the future of manufacturing in WA!

Check out how our local partner, Sun Industries Pty Ltd, used traditional screen printing techniques to help produce the decals and labels for our new Cranio Pro-IO devices! Screen printing is an incredible process where ink is pushed through a high-quality silk screen mesh using a squeegee on a specialised machine. The design is baked onto the mesh using a bright light, emulsion, film, and a vacuum frame, ensuring every detail is precise. The result is unmatched accuracy, with perfectly straight lines and no sawtooth edges or variations. Sun Industries combined this time-honoured technique with other modern printing technologies to produce great results for Cranio, which look great and capture all the important details we need.

Cranio made an appearance at the Perth Mobile App Developers Meetup, hosted by Adapptor on Wednesday night! ???? Ayrton and Ravinder took the stage to present our journey in developing a mobile app as a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for Cranio—a high-speed data logging and control system. They shared insights into the challenges of achieving seamless data flow and visualisation at such high speeds, sparking some fantastic discussions. It was great to connect with local app developers and hear about their thoughts and projects. 2024 has been a milestone year for meetups, and we’re looking forward to more in the year ahead! Thanks to Amit and Xarion for their work in getting the presentation working smoothly!

Come behind the scenes with us as we explore Sun Industries Pty Ltd, our local WA industrial printing partner with over 74 years of expertise. Gavin and his team produced the first run of graphic fascia labels, decals, and overlays for our Cranio Pro-IO devices and were kind enough to bring us inside their Osborne Park facility to show us the process in person! We were excited to see how traditional tools and processes like screen printing, mechanical clamshell presses, and a guillotine from 1954 are seamlessly integrated with the latest Canon Arizona flatbed printers and laser cutters. Gavin’s team used specialized materials and hybrid printing techniques to produce long-lasting labels for Cranio that can endure harsh conditions like UV exposure under solar panels. It was such a pleasure to witness the process and hear Ayrton and Gavin discuss the importance of open communication, strong collaboration, and innovative thinking in Australian manufacturing.

A high tech 74-year-old local manufacturing business!? ? What a dream to work with Gavin Parker and his team at Sun Industries Pty Ltd on our graphic fascias and decals for Cranio. And he's just down the road!? ? Industrial printing can seem run of the mill... and a highly competitive space, especially with the likes of offshoring providers in this domain.? ? But there is a reason Gavin's business has become a profitable and sustainable business over so many generations!? ? I think it’s because of... the high level of communication and collaboration!?Something I see everywhere offshore - Taiwan, USA... China... less so here in Australia and Perth, unfortunately.? ? I met Gavin a few years ago when prototyping decals for early prototypes of Cranio. He welcomed our business, even for a small run of a few decals.? ? We had struggled with quality and repeatability from offshore suppliers. One batch was great, the next batch, completely different. We never really knew what we were getting. Cost, quality, and delivery time frames, all over the shop!? ? When I approached Gavin, he laid all his knowledge out for me... for free! Totally open communications.? ? We worked through what the product needed to stand up to, and he came up with a fit for purpose combination of materials and technology that would work for our use case.? ? Gavin's business combines the old and new in hybrid processes to give the best of the best in industrial printing. ? Kicking off the job to make the first 100 production labels, we hit some small challenges, so the ability to go down and talk through those challenges in person within a day was truly a dream. ? That sounds so weird, I know. But sometimes these challenges, when working with offshoring suppliers, can be days and days of emails back and forward. Extreme frustration, compromise and often risk... "Stuff it... just roll with whatever they say, so we can achieve the deadline".? ? I have seen high levels of communication and collaboration A LOT in large manufacturing communities overseas when I've delivered designs to be manufactured there, so it’s exciting to see a glimmer of it here in WA.? ? We need more of this high level of communication. Less, flick off an email and you may or may not get back a quote with a “Go away, we are too busy,” price.? ? There is so much high-tech manufacturing going on in Australia and Perth.? ? Sun Industries is a testament to doing it right in all aspects of business and innovation!? ? We are super excited to have them as part of our ‘all local manufacturing’ goal for Cranio!

Fancy a look at the development of our Cranio web app, particularly how we map out and plan the user experience using whiteboards & Figma? We are essentially creating a visual programming language for users to set up their own generic data logging & control systems using easily available components with our modular devices. Thanks to Ayrton & Kathryn for this insight!

The whiteboard is my number 1 tool these days.? ? Figma is our second step when fleshing out graphical designs and interfaces.?Kathryn?is our in-house Figma wizard who takes my crazy whiteboard sketches and makes them into beautiful insights.? ? We do a lot of human machine interfaces. Making data into actionable insights takes work.? ? Sometimes you can mock up wireframes. Sometimes you need to detail things to really understand it.? ? Discovering missing elements through the process is usually the outcome, and this is good. Better discovering it sooner rather than later and iterating on the new elements.? ? Check out Kathryn and I reviewing some of the work we have done for our Cranio IoT datalogging and control interface in Figma, ready for the engineers to do their bit.? ? Also, check out the whole podcast! The link is in my page description.

Plan your app! ... And do the least amount of work to get to the outcome you need.? ? Our process is usually: Whiteboard out the screens Figma out' wireframes? Partially detail the wireframes? Fully brand and flesh out each page and each click/tap A lot of the time we will stop at a step and find we discovered something we couldn't see from the work completed in the previous step.? ? This is OK!? ? Iterate, iterate, iterate.? ? Different people need different levels of detail to uncover those discoveries at each step, so we need to tailor the process to give them the best value.? ? If you like, you can check out the full podcast by following the link in my page description.

Can you guess which one is the render, and which one is real? This is our pre-production Cranio Pro-IO device with our “all the wireless” TCW1 comms and compute module on the top, and our “any industrial sensor, some industrial actuation” MAD1 logging and actuation module. Ready for field testing. Amazing how close the renders are to the rear thing once we have Blender dialled in!
