Electra was selected for two U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded partnerships, further accelerating commercial adoption of our clean iron. We’re collaborating with Idaho National Laboratory and DNV to develop LCA tools and methodologies for benchmarking cradle-to-gate environmental impacts for multiple iron production methods. Thank you U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for your continued support.?
?? The latest Voucher Recipients have confirmed their partnerships with Voucher Providers—worth over $20M! Congratulations to the organizations that have been matched through DOE’s Voucher Program! The U.S. DOE Office of Technology Transitions, in collaboration with the Offices of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED), Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management | U.S. Department of Energy, and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), previously announced that over 170 companies, tribes, and local governments will receive support to advance commercialization of clean energy technologies in the form of in-kind DOE-funded vouchers. The #VoucherProgram is designed to grant small businesses, local governments, and other non-traditional partners access to the vetted resources and expertise they need to bring their clean energy technologies and projects to the next level. In this recent round, the program offered 7 different Vouchers support across many capabilities ranging from testing facility access to trusted third-party subject matter expertise. Currently accounting for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, transforming steel and cement production is critical for addressing climate change without slowing development. Electra’s CEO Sandeep Nijhawan is joining Leah Ellis CEO of Sublime Systems and Julia Attwood of Bloomberg at SOSV Climate Tech Summit on Thursday, October 17 to discuss disruptive technologies, building first-of-a-kind facilities, market demand, and how policy can accelerate commercial adoption of green steel and cement.?Details and registration link below.
SOSV Climate Tech Summit (Free | Virtual | Oct 14-18) > Main Stage Session > " ?? Steel and Cement's Electrifying Future" ? Register to the Summit (free): https://lnkd.in/dfQmzNwG (4,500+ registrants) At 7-8% each, #steel and #cement production are responsible for 15% of global emissions. Since 2020, investors have funded dozens of startups – $2.8B for steel and $925M for cement – aiming to decarbonize these indispensable #industrial sectors. Today, the best approaches are far from settled. Both Massachusetts Institute of Technology-spinout?Sublime Systems?and?Electra?use novel electricity-based (as opposed to heat) technologies to create green cement and steel, and both are on the path to their first production plants – Sublime with an $87M federal grant, and Electra with an $85M round backed by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures. The greening of steel and cement may hinge on their success. Continuing to forge a greener iron and steel industry, Electra is launching its ARPA-E ROSIE project to develop and build a prototype system to recover iron metal and flux materials from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel slag. A by-product of steelmaking, EAF slag has low iron content, making it an unconventional but potentially valuable feedstock.? As Electra’s co-founder and CTO Quoc Pham explains, “We envision a completely circular US steelmaking ecosystem that regenerates both iron and flux materials lost to slag during steel production. This will enable a domestically sourced value chain of flux materials and ore-based metallics for steel with a reduced environmental impact. We are grateful to ARPA-E’s support as we develop this technology to increase circularity and sustainability within the industry.” Learn more about ARPA-E's ROSIE program here: https://lnkd.in/eB85dCvs
