    The ‘bad hire’ stories no one talks about ?? Hiring mistakes cost money. At senior level, they also cost time, culture, and credibility. I’ve seen it happen when companies: > Don’t follow up on references properly. The referees provided are usually the best ones - not always the most truthful. > Trust a title over actual responsibility. ‘Global Sales Lead’ sounds impressive until you realise the company had three employees. > Assume a team’s success belongs to the individual. A candidate says, “We won this huge deal,” but what exactly did they do? Find the lead? Close the sale? Process the paperwork? These are very different things. > “I don’t need to interview them, I know them”. Bad decisions are made on gut feeling, especially when due process hasn’t been followed. Don’t shortcut. It’s important for both parties. The wrong hire doesn’t just impact the business, they impact the team, the strategy, and the bottom line.     Every year, I hear the same myths about hiring sales leaders. Let’s clear up a few: “We know everyone in our market.” You don’t. The best sales talent isn’t on job boards or active on LinkedIn; they’re not always in your industry and they’re being headhunted by your competitors. “If they want the job, they’ll get here.” Expecting a candidate to fly in from New York at 3am for a 20-minute pitch with barely 24 hours' notice is unreasonable. The idea that top talent should prove their commitment is outdated. “We don’t believe in selling the position.” The best people have choices. If you assume the opportunity speaks for itself, you’ll lose them to a company that takes the time to engage them. “If they get tempted away by another offer in their 3 month notice period, they aren’t the right person anyway.” Yes, they probably are.?But you lost them as you didn’t do a good enough job of keeping them engaged during this time. Retention of your hire starts with you at the offer stage, not on their first day in the company. Great hiring isn’t passive. It’s competitive.     AI in hiring: a help or a headache? ?? AI is brilliant at sifting through large volumes of CVs, but it’s only as good as the information it’s given. If you don’t search the right keywords, you won’t find the right people. That’s a problem when top talent isn’t applying for roles. They’re busy delivering results, not updating their CVs to match an algorithm. If a brilliant sales leader uses the wrong job title or a company calls them something slightly different, they can get overlooked entirely. Where AI does help is in research. Building targeted search strings, mapping industries, the talent landscape and generating target company lists. But recruitment isn’t just about filtering CVs. It’s about understanding leadership, culture, and the characteristics that make the individual the right fit. The internet is having a field day, but for those of us in hiring, this is nothing new. Last week, I removed a prospective hire from a search after spotting major inconsistencies. Their LinkedIn and CV didn’t match—years were off, companies were missing, and with a bit of extra digging, I found multiple profiles with conflicting histories. A quick call to a trusted source confirmed it: they’d been dismissed from a previous role for falsifying figures. With AI-generated CVs making it easier than ever to fabricate experience, senior hiring needs more scrutiny than ever. Due diligence isn’t optional. If a CV looks too good to be true, it probably is.     As a recruiter, I was keen to watch the recent BBC Panorama programme, "Should We Still Be Working from Home?" This is a topic that comes up often for me and my clients. The portrayal of remote workers was quite shocking, particularly the statements suggesting that we are creating a generation not used to "proper work." The programme talked of increased Monday-to-Friday revenues at golf clubs and even interviewed a recruitment consultant working from one, which reinforced the stereotypes about home-based professionals. Lord Rose, the former chairman of Asda, said that the rise in work-from-home culture is dragging Britain’s economy back 20 years. I disagree! This is such an outdated and unfair opinion when I look at the dedication shown by the remote workers I am in touch with. With a high proportion of employers struggling to fill their vacancies, flexibility is a "must-have" to attract the best talent. I am certain that if the costs of childcare were subsidised, and if there were better facilities for our elderly generation home working wouldn’t be such a necessity. I believe that remote workers are some of the smartest and most committed professionals out there. In my sector (sales leaders), if you don’t perform, you don’t last—it’s as simple as that. Many work incredibly late into the evenings and start early to deliver the results required, often while balancing complex personal responsibilities. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that office working is the only effective way to collaborate and innovate but this doesn't happen all day every day and many of my clients bring their people together once or twice a week to do this. I think these antiquated opinions about remote work need to be challenged. What do you think? #homeworking #salesleaders

    I?practice yoga in my garage in the mornings before work, two or three times a week. I love the 'outside' feeling and it’s even better when it rains! A quick 10-15 minute morning routine is enough to settle my mind and adjust my mindset for the day. The other mornings I swim, and when I swim my mind is more active but I find it helpful to swim to?organise thoughts and to plan my day ahead. Next is the dog walk; 30 minutes around the river. Even though I see the same space every day, I love watching the change in seasons and the nature that surrounds it. I feel grateful for my surroundings and for having my best friend with me. And yes, I have to get up early to fit this in and be in my office on time (5.30am).? If I swim, I start a bit later. The loss of half an hour's work is worth swapping for the right headspace. I’m more productive in less time. These daily rituals help me feel prepared and focused for the day, and the tougher the day is, the more critical it is that I don’t miss them.
