Have you heard of glimmers? Our wonderful ELDAA Doula Belinda Price from Leaving Legacies chats with Sophia Perera. Who, six years After losing her eldest daughter, Valentina, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. But through it all, somehow she remains positive. “What I'm going through is nothing compared to entire families being wiped apart, children growing up without any family in a war-torn country and in a refugee camp. So I always kind of think of the bigger picture.” Beautiful, tender, sad, moving and hopeful. Listen below: https://lnkd.in/gZepFts5

When we get past our fear of dying, this is when we truly start living. We live sanitised lives, so far removed from the process of death that many of us don’t know what to do when we get there. While many are afraid of own deaths, we are even more afraid of losing our loved ones. This sometimes results in challenging situations when people are in hospital, critically unwell and unable to make decisions for themselves. Their loved ones can struggle to make decisions for fear of feeling they ‘gave up’ too early or pushed for too many invasive and often uncomfortable procedures. I love my parents dearly. They are in their 60s, picture of good health but despite this, I am so worried about losing them one day. So much so that we talk about what we each wish for ourselves and have undergone the process of establishing Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA). I encourage you to talk to your families EPOA so that you and your family can make decisions for each other if one is unable to oneself. It is only activated when one is unable to make these decisions like if you were unconscious or had significant cognitive decline. For anyone with severe chronic or life-limiting illness, think about an advanced care directive. This allows you to share with your family your priorities; whether it is to maximise time or comfort, whether you prefer to be cared for in hospital, hospice or at home. An advanced care directive is not about ‘giving up’, it’s about taking charge of whatever time you have left. It’s about having a conversation with a healthcare professional and including your wider whanau in your journey. I was recently interviewed by ED & Paediatric Doctor, Nina Su from Auckland hospital, for her Podcast 'Revolving Door Syndrome', on Advance Care Planning and our attitudes towards death in today's society. It is a privilege to get the Doula-word out there in our communities. Thanks Nina :) https://lnkd.in/gQVAr8uy

The rich and diverse NZ Palliative Care Conference Hospice New Zealand was an incredible experience. ELDAA were honored to be part of conversations that will guide and shape the future of palliative care in NZ. The shared vision to "keeping listening and working from a place of love not fear and upholding the value of palliative care as a social good not a medical event" is inspiring and we are passionate about supporting this. A special thanks to Hospice New Zealand for inviting our End of Life Doulas, Treza Swansong and Melanie Humphries-Connolly, to korero and share their wonderful wisdom and knowledge.
What an amazing two days of Hospice NZ Palliatiive Care conference to connect, learn, share and be aware the future is here. The kaupapa and kōrero were so rich. From valuing our holistic approach in a health system that is not always good at seeing the whole person to celebrating our brand as Wellbeing through until end. We were challenged to consider how can help grow the palliative care profession in our Asia pacific region? How are death doulas supporting the circle of care? What are the triumphs of partnerships and compassionate communities? Are we listening to the voices of underserved communities and how is assisted dying sitting alongside palliative care? The future is here. We have been challenged to keep listening and working from that place of love not fear and upholding the value of palliative care as a social good not a medical event. Thank you to all the presenters and everyone who attended.
