Robust Stack Smashing Protection for WebAssembly: New Research Publication WebAssembly is gaining adoption, but memory vulnerabilities remain an issue. A study by Quentin Michaud, Yohan Pipereau, Olivier Levillain, and Dhouha Ayed analyzes weaknesses in Stack Smashing Protection (SSP) and proposes improvements. Key Findings ?? SSP Reference Value Overwrite – WebAssembly's memory layout allows attackers to modify the reference value, bypassing protections. ?? Weak Randomness – SSP relies on runtime-generated randomness, which can fail, making the protection ineffective. Proposed Fixes ?? Secure Reference Storage – Moving the reference value to protected memory reduces exposure to attacks. ?? Handling Randomness Failures – Better error handling prevents predictable canary values that attackers can exploit. Impact Tests show that these improvements strengthen WebAssembly security without affecting performance. Making SSP a default feature would enhance protection across applications. New Research: SURE – Secure Unikernels for Faster and Safer Serverless Computing Authored by Federico Parola (Politecnico di Torino), Shixiong Qi, Anvaya B. Narappa, K. K. Ramakrishnan (University of California, Riverside), and Fulvio Risso (Politecnico di Torino), this publication is part of the #ELASTIC Project and was presented at the ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing (SoCC ‘24). This work introduces SURE, a unikernel-based serverless framework designed to reduce function startup time and improve security. ?? High-performance zero-copy data plane – eliminates networking overhead for seamless inter-function communication. ?? Library-based sidecar for lightweight service mesh orchestration – reducing CPU overhead and improving efficiency. ?? Intel’s Memory Protection Keys (MPK) for secure shared memory access – preventing privilege escalation while maintaining high performance. ??
