Happy Birthday Grant Hummer!
Remembering GRANT HUMMER on his birthday. It has been a little over a year since we lost Grant but his impact carries on, especially with me personally and professionally. Grant had many qualities including: loyalty to family, friends and colleagues, passion for the civil engineering profession, relentless community volunteering, and commitment to ELA Group to make our core values of exemplary professional service to our clients within a relaxed and fun loving workplace carry on. Grant was a mentor to me and many others. He was part of the team that interviewed me for my first professional position over 35 years ago. It helped that I was a Penn State alumnus as Grant bled blue and white. He was one of a kind when it came to concrete wall design….calculations hand scribbled on whatever scrap paper was nearby done in what seemed like a few minutes. My memories working with Grant are many. The next time you drive on the I-81 / 322 interchange in Harrisburg, that was a young Grant Hummer project. Happy Birthday Grant!

We asked our newest team member, Thomas, to tell us a little about himself, and how he got into Civil Engineering. "I am a firm believer in the lord. I try to give thanks to him for all that he has?done. Gifting me a wife, a son,?and another child on the way, I value family time. I love it when my family is together all in one place,?having a great?time. Every day is looked at as a chance to get better. To be at the top of my game in life, I wake up at 4 a.m. to work out (heavy lifting, HIIT, basketball, athletic performance, etc.) from 5 a.m. to 6:15 a.m.?This helps me focus?and stay healthy, de-stress,?and impacts my mood/performance for the day. In the early stages of?my life, I?was decent at art. Sold a pastel piece for $500 in Middle School. In math class, I was the guy most people asked to help with their homework. I put those two together and caught an interest in Engineering. The few projects I have helped design, and seeing it being constructed in person was like a breath?of fresh air. Now, I?hope to grow with the wisdom of the Team around me and take on more challenges. I like seeing the city I?was born in, being remodeled and rebuilt/built for the better." - Thomas Small Join us in welcoming Thomas to our ELA Family.

On Tuesday, February 11th, Thomas Devenney, PE visited the Warwick Middle School Future City team to be part of a mock judging panel to help prepare them for the upcoming national Future City competition. This mock judging panel comprised of 8 people including design professionals, public utility representatives, environmental agency representatives, and land planning professionals. The WMS Future City team will be competing for gold against teams from across the country in Washington D.C. on 2/16 and 2/17. ELA is proud to support the outstanding program WMS has for Future City.

Michael Huxta, RLA., a Project Manager at ELA Group, Inc., and a Command Sergeant Major in the PA National Guard requested the Office of Secretary of Defense/Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) to recognize his supervisor, Cheryl Love, RLA., Director: Landscape Architecture, for her support of him in his military commitment. Col. Jim Astor, USAF (retired), honored Cheryl with the Patriot Award. This certificate recognizes her and ELA Group, as Patriotic Employers contributing to America's national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America's National Guard and Reserve force. ELA also signed a Statement of Support, which sends a clear message to employees that they do not have to worry about their civilian job while serving our country. Special Thank you to veterans Derek Hummer, Jeremy Strathmeyer, Karl Spidel, and Taylor Claar from the Lititz Springs VFW Post 1463 for attending the ceremony to support Mike during his current deployment.
