Su Conexión A La Comunidad

Mission: The mission of El Centro, Inc., a for purpose organization, is “strengthening communities and improving lives of Latinos and others through educational, social, and economic opportunities.” While times have changed during the nearly 40 years we have been a part of this community, one thing has stayed constant- our commitment to the people of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties, particularly the growing Hispanic population. We strive to be the premier organization bridging Latinos and others, resulting in healthy, educated communities. Please take a moment to read our mission and history. It will show you where we’ve been and where we’re going…with your help. History: El Centro was established in 1976 with a $10,000 grant from the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, along with the blessing of Archbishop Ignatius J. Strecker, Father Ramon Gaitan, the commitment of the Cordi Marian Sisters, and a group of energetic and caring community members who saw a need for an organization to address the needs and concerns of Kansas City, Kansas’ Hispanic population. With that care and commitment, El Centro de Servicios para Hispanos was born. In the intervening years since our humble beginnings, we have grown from a single location to three locations in Kansas City, Kansas and Olathe, serving more than 10,400 individuals and families per year. Our programming has evolved from our first program for elders – the Senior Day Program – to include The Academy for Children – a dual-language Pre-K program, workshops on money-management and homeownership, health education and healthy living outreach through our Promotores de Salud (Health Promoters) volunteers, health navigation, domestic violence prevention and intervention, and our policy and advocacy efforts for issues of special interest to our community. While our Senior Day Program is no longer a part of what we do, we still embrace people no matter their stage in life to empower them for the future.

  • Recently, the Governor vetoed two provisions in the state budget that would force the state to look at a parent’s or caregiver’s eligibility for KanCare every month. Since 2010, those individuals have been able to keep their KanCare coverage for a 12-month period. The Kansas Legislature is likely to try to override her veto soon. If this becomes law, very low-income parents and caregivers — those making less than $11,856 or less a year for a family of four, living at 38% of the Federal Poverty Level — will lose coverage or have delayed medical services due to very small month-to-month changes in income. As an organization that helps families apply for coverage, we can tell you firsthand how difficult the application process already is. Having to verify income or apply more often if losing coverage only creates barriers to healthcare for families living with so little. If you live in Kansas, take action now!

  • We are saddened to learn that one of the great visionary founders of El Centro, Father Ramon Gaitan, passed away in his home in San Antonio, Texas yesterday on April 8th, 2025. Father Gaitan was a courageous Latino leader who led the efforts to establish El Centro in 1976. He saw the need for a Latino-led organization to serve the growing Latino, Spanish-speaking population in Kansas City and together with other Latino leaders began El Centro with a $10,000 grant from the Archdioceses of Kansas City, Kansas. He brought the dedicated group of Cordi-Marian sisters from San Antonio who launched El Centro’s first programs that focused on supporting migrant workers. Prior to El Centro in Kansas City, he helped found El Centro of Topeka, Kansas as well and has done so much to support Latino communities here in Kansas and across the U.S. His legacy of leadership, deep faith, and advocacy for Latinos and vulnerable communities will always be remembered and live on in the mission El Centro continues today. Gracias Father Gaitan and may you rest in peace.

The Human Service Fund provides grants to nonprofit agencies to support human service programs that promote Johnson County residents' well-being, personal safety and self-sufficiency. One nonprofit that has benefitted from this funding is El Centro, Inc., which provides educational, social and economic services for Latino families in Kansas City. With the grant funding El Centro receives from the HSF, they're able to guide families through their health navigation program – linking people to care, getting them insured and providing education about the health care system. Across the nation, we're seeing the resurgence of diseases like tuberculosis (TB) and measles — diseases that we had under control until recently. Yet our federal government continues to gut public health funding, restrict Medicaid, and disinvest in the health of our communities. “This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a public health catastrophe, one that should serve as a wake-up call to policymakers,” write Erica Andrade, CEO of El Centro Inc. and Sheree Keith, Director of Public Health Strategy and Programs for The Kansas City Star. These outbreaks are proof that disinvesting in public health doesn't save money—it costs lives. And we are paying the price. Kansas is just the beginning. What’s going to happen if we don’t act now?
