Part 1 of 2. Are you different than Tiger Woods, Martha Stewart, General Patton? The answer is going to surprise and shock some to their core. Most people attribute the accomplishments of legends like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan to claims they’re just naturally gifted, blessed, one of a kind, generational talent or some other term to set them apart from theirselves. To the uninformed this explains so much. Look at Jordan and Tiger, we don’t look like them. I would argue that Tiger looked like any other skinny California kid and remember #23 wasnt good enough for his high school basketball team. To the informed, these traits/ labels conveniently give an excuse that lets the person off the hook from working as hard as they did. Replace Tiger and Jordan with a leader from your industry and are they just smarter, have a better memory than you, born to lead maybe, more charismatic? Einstein must be different b/c of an IQ gap, just smarter. Some estimates are 100 failures per 1 success or genius of Einstein. In one study golfers quit a change to their mechanics they chose to make if it didn’t produce great results within 2 swings. If they would have stuck with it for 5-6 committed shots (assuming proper analysis and remedy) they would be stacking, compounding the learned move instead of excuses as to why they can’t do it. The truth is these great performers really are operating on a different level, physically and mentally. They’ve trained themselves to work through failure in ways most of us can barely imagine. But it’s not some preordained miracle. Their achievements come from a long, grueling process that ANYONE can follow. Yes, it’s tough, and very few are willing to commit to the end. However, no matter how far we ultimately get, every step forward makes us better. The real question is whether we’re prepared to do what it takes, or whether we’ll keep making excuses.
