In Kenya, while there’s no standalone legislation for work at height, Article 77(7) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2007 mandates safety measures where falls of over three meters are possible. But is this enough? In tomorrow’s #EHSUnpluggedPodcast episode with Victor Omondi Okello, we explore how companies can bridge this gap through best practices, structured training, and proactive safety measures. Tune in as we discuss the future of work at height safety! #Workatheight #Legislation #OSH

The Kenyan government is committed to achieving SDG Goal 1—ending poverty in all its forms. Formalizing the informal Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector is a key step toward this goal. With over 250,000 Kenyans relying on ASM for their livelihoods, formalization would not only enhance income security but also drive investments in healthcare and infrastructure in rural communities. A structured approach would accelerate poverty reduction while ensuring equitable access to land and mineral resources. Faith Mlewa African Occupational Compliance Institute

Thanks to the government’s efforts through the Department of Mining, the formalization of the mining sector (gold mining) is underway. By working collectively, miners can now access financial services such as loans-empowering them to invest in health, safety and environmental conservation. #ehsunpluggedpodcast

Work should build futures, not destroy childhoods. Yet, as of 2020, 160 million children worldwide were victims of child labour—79 million of them trapped in hazardous conditions that threaten their safety, health, and lives. ?? 97 million are boys ?? 63 million are girls According to Article 3 of ILO Convention No. 182, hazardous child labour includes work in dangerous or unhealthy conditions that could result in death, injury, or illness due to poor safety and health standards. The ILO’s dedicated efforts to establish OSH as a fundamental human right at work, supported by the national government’s commitment to strengthening OSH legislation, have created a strong foundation for progress. However, real change will only happen if we, as an OSH community, align our efforts with the OSH National Plan. By working together behind national priority areas, we can drive meaningful impact, transform workplaces, and advance the goal of decent work for all. Our webinar on A Positive Approach to Understanding Suicide Causation & Prevention with Rosie Russell, IIRSM President has had me emotional for days. It hit deep. I even shared it with my mum and tried to explain it to her in our native language—because these conversations need to happen everywhere. Suicide is complex, but approaching it with understanding, empathy, and prevention strategies can truly make a difference. If you attended the session, what stood out for you? Let’s keep this conversation going in the comments. IIRSM Link to episode: https://lnkd.in/duNPH3cD
