Featured Project: Bayview Residence "With more than 200 awards to their credit since 1979, Culver City–based Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects can lay claim to a remarkable array of contemporary residential commissions. Despite building sites that are frequently challenging, their houses are exquisitely composed and sublimely scaled to respect their neighbors, with stacked volumes that rotate and intersect with stunning virtuosity. Exterior materials play off each other like instruments in an orchestra—light against dark, rough against smooth—as in this Hermosa Beach house, their Featured Project, whose white cement plaster walls are paired with painted metal panels and shou sugi ban charred wood. Cascading down its steep site, which is bounded by streets on both ends, the house still manages to enjoy stunning vistas, intimate spaces and—most impressively—flat yard space for the owners and their children." Respectful to a neighborhood mainly consisting of Spanish-styled homes from the 1940s, Crescent Drive Residence was designed with comparable scale and materials, but with a modern twist. While the front of the house is designed with privacy in mind, once past the front gate, the home expands its living space into the outdoors seamlessly, taking full advantage of the California climate. Part of the EYRC approach to Community-Centric Campus Design is inspired by the work of marine conservationists. When restoring a coral reef, one will often place artificial structures - scaffolds if you will - that are purposely designed for the growing coral to bind onto.??This is very similar to our approach to campus projects as we strive to create these unique spaces that encourage highly memorable shared experiences between students.?These interpersonal bonds help foster community and create a feeling of being at home within the university. #architecture #campus #campusdesign Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects (EYRC) UC San Diego HKS, Inc. The Theatre District Living and Learning Neighborhood at UC San Diego is one of the most ambitious projects we've undertaken at EYRC Architects. Together with our partner architects at HKS, we created a mixed use student housing complex with 2,000 beds, built to foster Student Success. Every aspect of the project - from the vibrant social spaces to areas for repose and reflection – all crafted with a purpose: to support well-being, encourage connection, and celebrate the diverse needs of students. Empathy starts with listening to People and Place.?In this place,?we must listen to the wind. This year's Net Zero Conference has launched! Hosted by?Verdical Group, later today (Sept. 18th) Sherwood's?Jimmy Galvez?is participating in a panel discussion of "Sausalito's Solution to Sea Level Rise" along with?Bryn Garrett?from?Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects (EYRC),?Janelle Kellman, Esq. (She/Her)?from the?City of Sausalito, and?David Godshall?from TERREMOTO LANDSCAPE. Varda Landing—an artist community on the shores of the San Francisco Bay in Sausalito, California—is currently being reimagined for long-term climate resilience. The project is designed to embrace the area's challenges with both frequent flooding and sea level rise, using foundations that can float in place as well as bioretention swales and flood-friendly plants that guide rising waters as they filter back into the bay.
