Career Growth Engineering. Helping talented introverts get paid more and promoted faster.

关于我们

Did you know that when you ask for a raise, you're doing everyone a favor? You might not want to ask because you're worried about looking selfish and burning your relationships. Even if you deserve a raise! Isn't that kinda backwards? If you're a talented introvert, you probably have the exact skills to maximize your salary without being (or appearing) selfish at all. You just need a few extra ingredients to get the recognition and paychecks you deserve.

The worst mistake in today's job search: Diving straight into tactics and strategies. When life throws challenges our way, we tend to follow the same pattern: - Ignore it until it’s too painful. - Try a cheap, quick fix. Hope it works. - When it doesn’t, try another fix. Fail again. - Try a new big-picture strategy. - Push ourselves too hard and too fast on it. - Feel a lack of fast, encouraging feedback. - Get exhausted and depressed. - Think, “maybe I just didn't find the right cheap, quick fix.” - Look for another cheap, quick fix. The Boom-Bust-Exhaustion Vortex of new tactics and strategies. Tactics and strategies are the obvious things that should make a difference when job searching. But what do you do when you've gone through the Boom-Bust-Exhaustion Vortex multiple times, and you still haven't made a dent? You stop looking for new tactics and strategies. To be clear: Tactics are the small moves we make. Think maneuvering a car on the highway. Strategy is the big picture. Planning the route of your road trip. Here's what everyone knows but always forgets: You get nowhere if you run out of gas on the road. Our energy is the fuel for all solutions. Without energy, there’s no momentum. No results. So before changing tactics or strategy in your job search, pause and ask yourself: - Am I measuring anything? - Am I learning new skills? - Am I energizing myself? Measure, Learn, Energize. If you’re not doing these, you’ll run out of gas, and no tactic will work. But if you are doing them, you’ll make faster progress AND grow holistically as a person. p.s. Trying to install a new habit in 2025? Or achieve a hard goal, such as: ?? Landing a great new job ?? Being a better parent ?? Losing 20 pounds ?? Writing a book These are not $5 goals. You can't achieve them without also growing as a person. And you can't grow as a person without following the growth formula. What's the formula? GROWTH = EFFORT × REST How does it work? Multiplication. Your effort is multiplied by your rest. If EFFORT = 0 Or REST = 0 Then GROWTH = 0. And if you want maximum growth, the equation helps with that too. GROWTH = Maximum when... EFFORT = REST The more unbalanced they get, the smaller growth gets. It's really that simple. There's only a few days left in the arbitrary time interval called 2024. Now you can start 2025 a little more effort wise. p.s. Learn more about my Mindful Job Search Sprints: https://lnkd.in/erTS746F

Client had 8 interviews in the last 2 weeks, moved forward with 6. Some from applying, some from networking. This is after months of frustration. An interview here, an interview there. Not being moved forward. So she's excited, but she had a question. "When do I stop applying?" She applied to 40 roles in the last week "out of paranoia" lol. My answer? "If it were me, I'd keep applying until I set foot in the (virtual) office." Why? 1. Network. Worst case, you make a connection with another organization, and you say, "sorry, I just took another offer." You'll have built a better network. Potential opportunities later. Nowadays, that's gold. 2. Negotiation. Getting multiple offers gives you incredible leverage to negotiate a higher salary. When the 1st offer comes, you say: ?? Great, thank you! I'm excited! ?? But I do have a few other offers coming soon. ?? I'd love to work with you, but its hard to ignore that they have higher salaries. ?? Can you give me time to review them and make an informed decision? ?? Or can you go up to $X? If so, I'd sign right away. And for the other potential offers, you can tell them to speed things up. ?? I just got another offer and have to tell them by mm/dd. ?? You're currently my 1st choice, but their offer is hard to ignore. ?? Is there any way we can speed up this process to see if we have a good fit? How you can do better in your interviews: Client said, "By the way, meditating is working wonders for my preparation!" I introduced her to mindfulness. She also read my ebook on Amazon. It's called "Interview Like A Human." It's only $0.99: https://a.co/d/j6U0GRU

Confusing job Interview question: "Tell me about yourself...but don't just walk me through your resume." Here's a 5 part formula to answer "Tell me about yourself." Ignore any confusing instructions they give you. Just say this: 1. "I'm really passionate about all things related to ____." Label yourself in a few words. It's good to have a slight niche. Not just "Marketing," but "Marketing analytics." Here's my personal example: I'm passionate about all things related to the psychology of influence and negotiation. 2. "Over the last X years, I've really learned how to ____." Label your most impressive skills. Bonus points if they fit the job posting. 3. "For example, in my role of X at company Y, we achieved ____." Break out your top metrics. 4. "And now, I'm excited to help an industry leader like [Company] to do [amazing things] for its customers." Replace "industry leader" with: ● "Industry disruptor." ● "Mission-driven organization." ● Whatever they see the company as. Show your customer-based focus. Show your understanding. Show your excitement. 5. "I could say more, but I'm curious if there was anything on my resume you wanted to know more about." Ask them a return question to keep it a conversation. Put it all together. Should take you 1-2 minutes to say. Do it right, and you control how the hiring team labels you as a candidate. ?? "Who do you like for the role?" ?? "The uh, negotiation guy? Dave?" ?? "Oh yeah I thought he was good too." p.s. FREE Job Interview Checklist https://lnkd.in/e3jCSY2J FREE Pay Raise Script https://lnkd.in/gkzS5yW2

You finally get the job offer. Do you ask for a higher salary? Let's say you do ask. You have a good argument. You're brave enough to say it. But they say No. ● Not in an insulting way. ● You wish they were insulting. They say: "We're sorry, but it's really the best we can do with what we have right now." You don't want to believe them. But you DO want to believe them too. So you say, "Ok. I'll still take the job." But you're smart, so you also say: "Is there any way to officially revisit this question in 3 months, if my performance exceeds expectations?" They say, "We can't promise anything, but we can talk about it later." You start the job. 2 months in: Even less fun than you imagined. ● It's your boss. ● It's your peers. ● It's the pressure. Something sucks. You're not happy "yet." Your salary is not helping. What do you do? This is a big moment. Most people do the wrong thing. What do they do? ● They carry on. ● They "stick it out." ● "I can make it a year!" They do nothing ?? Things get worse, little by little. Suddenly they're desperate to leave. The right move is to start job hunting again quickly. ● Low pressure. ● Do it casually. You won't get an offer for at least a few months anyway. And by that time, you'll know if: ● The salary discussion is real or not. ● The problems can be fixed. People don't do this because: ● They prefer to hope, not act. ● They don't want to "fail" the job. ● They don't want to seem "unserious." They're not sure how to explain why they're leaving so soon in job interviews. But these are mind traps. Take some time to come up with a (truthful-ish) explanation. Use AI to help. It's easier than ever. So consider this post: ● Your permission. ● Your invitation. ● Your directive. I'm telling you, for your own sake. Casual job hunting is a lovely position to be in. ● 5 - 10 apps a week. ● Same basic cover letter. ● Don't make a project out of it. Just lower your own psychological barrier to leaving the job. You'll feel positive side effects. ● Less investment in the drama. ● Less focus on the fires. ● More mental freedom. There's no reason to wait until you're desperate to leave. p.s. Negotiate your salary like a diplomat. Here's 4 keys. They're "non-negotiable" ?? 1. Mindset 2. Opening 3. Offer Call 4. Counter offer 1. Mindset Go in thinking "I'm excited to have a positive impact on the company. I'd love to be met with an equal commitment and investment on the company's end." 2. Opening Don't be the first to say a number. If they ask you, redirect. "I assume you have an approved range budgeted for the role. Any chance you'd be comfortable sharing it?" 3. Offer Call If the recruiter or hiring manager makes an offer on the phone, don't negotiate. Collect info. The #1 question you want to understand: How did they arrive at that number? 4. Counter offer The best counter offer is to give them 3 options for comp packages that are aligned with market data. Tweak the variables: ● Base salary ● Bonus ● Equity ● PTO ● Etc. p.s. Want hiring teams to ?? you? Use these scripts ???? Job Interviews suck right? ● You're nervous ● You're being "graded." ● You have to bull?? well. With a big smile ?? But guess what? Interviews suck for hiring managers too. ● It's another thing on their plate. ● They're just hoping to get it done. ● They don't know what they're doing. They just want to find someone good and move on with their sad lives. You can use this to your advantage. How? Empathize with them. How many applicants do they have? Probably 100s. ● They're not thinking "So much to choose from!" ● They're thinking "So much work to do!" ● "What if we don't even find a fit?" Imagine having to do all those interviews, and you might still need to do more. So here's a tiny empathy hack. At some point in the application process, say: "You must have 100s of applicants," like you feel their pain. My favorite cover letter goes like this: "Dear [insert company name] team, You must have 100s of applicants for the role of [insert title], so to keep this short, here are a few points about why I may stand out and be worth interviewing. 1. I have 600+ hours of coaching experience. 2. I have a MS in Neuroscience and Education. 3. I have a certificate in applied Positive Psychology (50 hours toward ICF certification). Thank you for your consideration. Best of luck with the hiring process, Dave Wolovsky" If you get interviewed, mention it there too. "I'm sure you have tons of qualified candidates, so I appreciate you taking the time to interview me. There's a bonus benefit of saying this. You get a feel for their process. They may even divulge some useful information. Either way, you're being likable. A little empathy can go a long way. p.s. The 3x trick to sound more: ● Charismatic ● Confident ● Credible It's a simple technique. Used throughout history by the great: ● Orators ● Debaters ● Teachers What is it? Make your point 3 times in a row. Say the same thing 3 different ways. ● Bing ● Bang ● Boom It's perfect for any: ● Job interview ● Presentation ● Discussion Here's an example (job interview): "I've spent the last 2 years learning how to get customers interested, excited...really engaged. ● Interested ● Excited ● Engaged All make the same point in slightly different ways. Another example (managing up to your boss): "If we don't change our strategy soon, we're going to lose our momentum, our progress, and our growth." ● Our momentum ● Our progress ● Our growth All slightly different, but they all make the same point. Here's the same example again, but stopping at the word "progress." "If we don't change our strategy soon, we're going to lose our progress." It sounds: ● Stunted ● Flimsy ● Weak So next time you want to make a point, and you want to sound: ● Credible ● Confident ● Charismatic ...hit your point 3 times in a row. Try it today champ! ??

Day 1: *That* Manager: "I'm not here to micromanage you." You (to yourself): Awesome, this is gonna be so much better than my last job! 1 week later: *That* Manager: "Hey, it looks like you didn't have anything scheduled at 11am today. Were you working?" You: "Yes, of course! I was working on that email to the board. Actually I wanted to ask you about it." *That* M: "Look, I'm not here to babysit you. I've got 15 things to do right now. Just make sure it hits all the points we discussed." You: "Oh, ok. Will do!" The next day: *That* M: "Did you finish the email draft? I didn't see it." You: "Yeah, I sent it last night." *That* M: "No you didn't. I didn't see it." You: "I don't know. Check again?" *That* M: "Oh now it's there. [Looks at you suspiciously]. Alright let's take a look." You: "I'm open to feedback." *That* M: "Oh no. We're gonna have to redo it." You: "Redo it!?" *That* M: "Yeah. The tone is completely off. Alright, sit down and start typing. Write exactly what I say." You (to yourself): Cool, so this is *not* micromanaging. This is based on real events. If you're going through anything like the above scenario, it's going to lead to burnout, fast. One thing you can start doing right away to try to remedy things is this: Be relentless about clarifying. Do not let *That* Manager get away with vagueness in their: ● Preferences ● Instructions ● Decisions It might also be a good time to update your resume, just to lower the barrier of leaving. Does your manager see you as "high value"? Here's a hack for that. We all know that great bosses coach their employees. But... Did you know that badass employees coach their bosses? Most people misunderstand what it means to "coach." They think it means giving advice. ?? Wrong They think it means giving feedback. ?? Wrong So what is coaching? ?? Asking the right questions. The right questions: ? Expand possibilities. ? Motivate & inspire. ? Open people up. ? Establish trust. Ask your boss about their future. Ask about their struggles. Listen, and ask more. Here's a sample script. Toward the end of your next 1:1, ask: "I'm curious on your end, what are your biggest priorities and challenges right now?" They may be terse at first. They won't want to worry you. They won't want to be vulnerable. But keep asking. In every 1:1 meeting. They'll open up eventually. And when they do open up: ? Listen without thinking too hard. ? Ask follow up questions. ? Take their side. Some good follow up Q's to help them process their thinking: ? "What ideas have you tried so far?" ? "Who else is involved in the process?" ? "Who do you ultimately need to convince?" Once they start opening up... ? Listen. ? Ask a few good Q's. You help them come up with their own solutions, just by listening. You'll become "high value" to them. You'll become a Boss Coach. Boss Coach = Coach of Bosses. Anyone can be a Boss Coach. You literally just follow this post. p.s.
