Regenerative agriculture is a powerful tool for combating climate change, improving soil health, and enhancing farmer livelihoods. But how can clean energy access play a role in scaling these efforts? Our report, "How Can Energy Access Practitioners Energise Regenerative Agriculture Settings", explores the intersection of energy access and sustainable farming. Using case studies from Kenya, it highlights how solar-powered technologies—like irrigation systems, composting tools, and drying solutions—can support regenerative practices, reduce emissions, and enhance resilience for farmers facing climate challenges. At #COP29, where global efforts focus on resilience and equitable energy access, this report provides actionable insights into bridging clean energy with sustainable agriculture. A global coalition to accelerate clean energy access through high-performing appliances.
关于我们
Efficiency for Access is a global coalition working to promote affordable, high-performing, and inclusive appliances that enable access to clean energy for the world’s poorest people. It is a catalyst for change, accelerating the growth of off and weak-grid appliance markets to boost incomes, reduce carbon emissions, improve quality of life, and support the Sustainable Development Goals. Efficiency for Access consists of 19 Donor Roundtable Members, 17 Programme Partners, and 34 Investor Network members. Current Efficiency for Access Coalition members have programmes and initiatives spanning 54 countries and 25 key technologies. The Efficiency for Access Coalition is coordinated jointly by CLASP, an international appliance energy efficiency and market development specialist not-for-profit organisation, and Energy Saving Trust, which specialises in energy efficiency product verification, data and insight, advice and research. www.efficiencyforaccess.org

Refrigeration is essential for reducing food waste, preserving vaccines, and supporting livelihoods. Yet, off-grid cooling systems must also address their own climate impacts. Our report, Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions Assessment of Off- and Weak-Grid Refrigeration Technologies, analyses how innovative solutions can minimise greenhouse gas emissions while enabling equitable access to sustainable cooling. With #COP29 spotlighting climate resilience, this report offers actionable insights into reducing emissions across the life cycle of refrigeration technologies—from raw materials to end-of-life management. For fishing communities along Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya, inadequate cold chain infrastructure contributes to food insecurity in the area. The Efficiency for Access Research & Development Fund supported Adili Solar Hubs Limited in developing a solar-powered cold chain system that improved fishers' incomes and addressed challenges related to water treatment, energy consumption, and transportation. There has been a relatively slow progress in climate negotiations at #cop29 in Baku which underscores the need for us to showcase to policy makers what sustainable solutions are available and ready to be financed and rapidly scaled up. I will speak about technology and business model innovation related to cooling and the wider energy-agriculture nexus at various panels over the coming days. The first one is tomorrow at the UK government pavilion called Sustainable Cooling in a Warming World where I will focus on the off-grid cooling landscape. I will refer to the key findings from the recent Cooling Atlas paper, developed in collaboration with Empa and Wageningen University & Research, and the latest technology innovation supported by the Efficiency for Access Research & Development Fund. Over 100 million people worldwide are affected by displacement, with nine out of ten lacking access to electricity in refugee camps and rural areas of the Global South. Additionally, four in five displaced people rely on basic fuels for cooking, which produces harmful smoke leading to chronic diseases, primarily affecting women and girls. These challenges have worsened over the last decade, making the achievement of SDG 7 in humanitarian contexts seem further away than ever. United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) champions clean cooking solutions, such as electric cooking, to mitigate health issues and reduce environmental impacts. As #COP29 discussions continue this week, watch our ‘Designing for Humanitarian Contexts’ webinar, where we highlight opportunities for impactful change at the intersection of humanitarian aid and the climate: https://lnkd.in/eJr7_R6w
